Half-Life

Half-Life

Can't play Half Life on Mac (Catalina)
Getting exited for Half Life Alyx,...So I re-downloaded Steam, bought Half Life Complete, and only Downloaded Half Life (1) for now to get started. Only to be disappointed, because every time I hit the "Play" Button it runs, but the screen doesn't change...as the Button changes states from " Play" to "Cancel", then Back to "Play" with nothing happening. The game data even says i've played "1 minute" of game time.

What Am I missing?

Dunno mate, never encountered this problem.

Unfortunately, Apple dropped support for 32-bit applications in macOS Catalina.[support.apple.com] I just downloaded the macOS version of Half-Life, and according to file,[en.wikipedia.org] hl_osx is a 32-bit application.

It looks like there is ways of getting 32-bit applications to work on Catalina, but I haven't tried any of them. I wish I could be of more help, but I don't use macOS on any of my machines.

Is there a 64-bit version of Half life?

No.

I've been looking for a solution to this too. It seems that Bootcamp and a Windows 10 partition may be a way to run it. Folks also talk about Xash 3D, which seems bizarre as that's an Android port afaik, and hasn't been fully tested on Mac.
I'd love a simple solution but I'm not holding out much hope tbh.

Xash3D is not an Android port. It does run on Android, but getting Half-Life to run on Android isn't its primary goal or purpose.

You might be able to compile 64-bit versions of Xash3D and the HLSDK. Xash3D dropped macOS support though,[github.com] so I doubt that it would work.

Dude, it's your fault you bought a mac. Macs aren't for games. Stop whining.
Stop saying this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stereotype sentences. I agree that Mac's target is not gamers. But it doesn't mean that Mac can't handle games. This was true before a lot of years.

That's entirely Apple's fault.

You can run Half Life natively on Mac, using the earlier mentioned Xash3d but from the awesome work at Mac Source Ports: https://www.macsourceports.com/game/halflife

Downside: it’s not compatible to launch within Steam, only „stand-alone“.

P.s.: that version of Xash3d also works with Blue Shift + Opposing Force.
