Half-Life

Is there any way to play mods without Steam?
Put simply, I'm sick of this OpenGL ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ lagging the ♥♥♥♥ out of my game every time the flashlight is turned on or some bright light or spark is going on in a corner at a far end of a map, and I'm sick of trying to figure out a solution for it as well besides Software, which is one ugly ♥♥♥♥♥. Back in non-steam, D3D would do the trick, but the option now seems to have vanished.

So I come to ask, is there any way one can start the mods that are normally placed in the Half-Life folder in a non steam version of Half-Life?

Put them in your Non-Steam version of Half-Life, change game and play it. Mods may be incompatible however.

Dang. All the mods seem to be crashing, though I think it's for using the Change Game option, not due to incompatibility. I've found it that the game tends to crash a lot when restarting the engine from the main menu. Still, with this happening, might be best to go back to square one in trying to fix the light issue with opengl back on steam...

Make a shortcut and add "-game [mod folder's name]" into target.
