how to play with a xbox one controller?

I want to play this game because many friends of me told me how good it was. The problem is that, unlike portal, my pdp xbox one controller is not reconized, and since I can't play a fps game without a controller, I'm stuck. Do someone have a solution please? Thanks!

You can't play an FPS without a controller? That's the definition of counter-productive right?

Well anyway, who am I to judge: because HL is a 1998 game it's pretty normal it doesn't support a controller. You can try plugging the controller in and try to change the setting manually. Go to options, keyboard and edit the setting for your controller. Other than that I don't think there is a way to play it with a controller, some external programs maybe?

why in god's name are you on steam if you want to use controllers for gaming. Use keyboard and mouse, literally the best way to play any PC game PERIOD.

I have to use a controller because of a disability.

Your best bet is to use a keyboard mapping program. I've forgotten names of particular programs, since it's been a while since i've played games that don't support them.

I travel for work a lot, I'm currently on a ferry with this exact issue, sorry we can't all pack around a desktop with a mechanical keyboard and mouse.
You can't argue that a control is the best mobile controller input.

@ Cabbage Stabber. You have to have a Steam controller for Half Life. I just tried it w/ an Xbox One controller, and a big warning pops up that the game was not meant to be played w/ a controller and you need a Steam controller to continue. Big Picture mode doesn't work in this case, and also I don't see the need to be so rude to someone because of their preference in how they play. Keep the superiority complex to yourself please.

The amount of people being ♥♥♥♥♥ in this thread is pretty pathetic honestly you can play half life or any game on the pc with a controller if its allowed. You are allowed to do so just because you want to use a controller doesn't make you any less of a pc gamer. People need to serisouly grow up. Simple.

nibba, I literally answered the question. Big picture is the controller-optimized client including Steam input, where you can bind mouse and keyboard controls to your controller. I answered the question.
But I am still free to express my opinion now, aren't I? Steam Input is pretty dope actually

Use Steam Big Picture Mode but if you don't like using that you can buy Controller Companion on the Steam Store.
