What car would Gordon drive before the events of Half-Life?
Since some friends and I are somewhat gearheads, we were wondering what kind of car Freeman would drive

Since Black Mesa is located in New Mexico, which is fairly flat and mostly straight roads, something with some power comes to mind. Timeline is around game's release, late 90s. And since Gordon's position probably pays well, with his degree in Theoretical physics, what comes to my mind would be an upper end or limited edition muscle car, something like a Cobra/Saleen built Mustang or Z28 Camaro.

What do you think Gordon would drive, given the parameters of HL lore?

With almost no official character traits, it's not easy to think of. He may very well have not had a car, as he did live in the dormitories at Black Mesa during his time of employment there up to the Incident.

If we were to speculate, keep in mind when Half Life takes place. I always assume it to take place in 2000, primarily due to the 200- mentioned in the letter in the HL manual. So any cars after that are out.

Given that Gordon may not have the best of salaries, and that his commute to work from his residence consisted of a tram ride, if he had a car that wasn't a Black Mesa SUV (which may have been limited to security personnel), I would guess a rather basic sedan or hatchback of somekind. Something simple, cheap and functional, and that gets relatively good mileage, as if he were to drive to places away from Black Mesa on his days off, he may have needed to drive some distance to get anywhere.

He got there on foot

No car. Freeman was authorized to keep the Hazard Course Longjump module, on the condition he not bring it into the offices and risk damaging equipment or harming co-workers. Safety first.

I’m pretty sure since he lives in the Level 3 Dormatories in Sector C, he probably tended to ride the trams more than drive a car.

But... can the scientist go back to home during vacations?

I consider the Level 3 Dormatories to be like apartment complexes for the employees to take up residence so they can be closer to the facility. The government wouldn’t want Black Mesa’s employees to potentially leak valuable information out to the public, so it’s better off that they have a place to live at the facility itself.

I see...

So, how does the people get to there for their employment day?

The tram system? We see Barney and Gordon riding the trams to work from the Level 3 Dormitories in the beginning of Half Life and Blue Shift, so it wouldn’t be too far fetched to say that that’s the predominant mode of transportation in Black Mesa, well until the Resonance Cascade happened and made them unusable for the most part.

Sorry I mean the hiring process for Black Mesa...

Anyway I'll prefer to go in Aperture

Oh... well in that case, I guess you’d just have to have a PhD or some high degree in the scientific field. If you wanted to be a security guard, however, I think they’d much looser on the employment prerequisites.

Working at Aperture isn’t good for your health. You’d have to be required to test if you want to continue to work there, and given the poor financial state of Aperture during the Portal games, I’d say the pay wouldn’t be that great either. That’s not getting into the fact that you’d probably be dead from neurotoxin thanks to GLaDOS.

Oh right I forgot about that part...

Anyway that gives me an idea, if I had to make a game where you wander in a destroyed facility I would tell that the protag is a random security guard

Yep, either that or a System Shock-like game
