Why would you get banned for modding the dll? What if someone wanted to modify it for SP only and not MP?

Well, .dll files are game core files. They have something like: Recoil, playerspeed etc. Sooo, if you edit it, u will get VAC banned.

You should compile a original half life dll for your mods, not modify the already existing one.

You can only get VAC banned if you cheat in an online server (typically using third party assist tools like an Aimlock or Mathack).

VAC does not give a ♥♥♥♥ about singleplayer games, console commands, or files that have been swapped around. For example you can freely change out the default weapon sounds.

Changing core files will most likely cause a sort of "version mismatch" or "Server enforcing consistency" error, and you simply won't be able to connect to online games. It's something like "sv_pure" from Quake 3 engine titles.
