Half-Life

Half-Life

They Hunger broke Half-Life
Alright, here's my problem:
I downloaded They Hunger the trilogy from moddb from an installer, but the game, when run, it was actually They Hunger 3 and it was acting really strange. I deleted the C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life\Hunger files and replaced the folder with the contents of a .zip file made by the same author on moddb, but it was still strange. I decided to just delete They Hunger and play vanilla Half-Life, everything was fine except for the red button UI from TH, showing even on OP4 and BS. I tried un- and then reinstalling all three, but to no avail.

Any help or info on how this happened or how to fix it is greatly appreciated!

Did you exit Steam then restart it after installing the games?

or try

Check the integrity of the game cache
1 Click Library in Steam
2 Righr click the Half-Life game
3 Next select properties
4 select TAB local files
5 click the box "check integrity or game cache..."

I tried those, but they didn't help take away the red UI. Thanks for the suggestion, anyway.

delete everything except the exe, then verify integrity

Delete everything in the Half-Life folder except for hl.exe?
1: why
2: tried and an error message said I need permission from the computer which is weird, because I'm the only account, not to mention an admin account, too

You installed it correctly the first time. Do not manually swap out files if you don't know what you are fiddling with. TH3 is the full release of all 3 TH episodes in one mod.

Reinstall Half-Life completely to undo your damage (do not pass "Verify Cache", do not collect $200)
Install They Hunger (giving a new "hunger" folder inside Steamapps/half-life)
Restart Steam.

Alright, I've fixed it! Apparently the installer also edited some stuff in my game files, like an image and startup music. The major thing was a file called "TrackerScheme." It's supposed tobe there, and it controls the colors of the menu and the text and stuff. The installer edited this file, and I found another copy I guess Valve has for safekeeping since it's way inside the game files. I replaced the bad TS with this one, and that made the UI go back to normal.
