If you first find the train and then meet O.D. for the first time, you actually need to talk to him a second time after getting your books for him to even mention the passcard. If you find the train after you meet O.D., there's nothing that tells you "Oh hey O.D. might know more about this, lets go ask him to advance the plot for us".
If this were a different Castlevania game, the Twin Dragon would just drop an item like a key that lets you get onto the train. In this one it's a fetch quest (made easy if you found all teleporter rooms) where you need to go Bromide > Photo > O.D. > Train.
thats OD and Dominique literally the what would be the most frequented places (if you are keeping up changing your tomes as you see fit its one of his earlier dialogues about saying you need a photograph from the church as soon as the Twin Towers is open)
infact going to OD all the time in early game nets you 3 books 4-5 visits to him does the job
the hints trail stops once you get invert because by then you need to kill Gabel (bad ending) or push forward and explore and get to the oriental lab as an igavania game exploration becomes key to unlocking the true ending, not saying as a veteran I literally cheesed my way into the Oriental Sorcery lab after getting invert that was the only logical place left unexplored
That just sounded slightly rude to me, since I believe everyone might have their own reasons for making a mistake there. Maybe depending on what games they played before.
That's what makes them so fun.
I know you're defending the game and I appriciate you helping me earlier but I still think it's poor game design, another example would be having to grind the water creatures to get the ability to go under water, it's never really explained anyway, even getting this ability that pushes the plot forward doesn't seem that important.
I get what you're trying to say about exploration, but putting something like a super important skill within a common enemy seems really silly.
But i do agree, speaking to O.D would be a good idea for ruling out what to do about the train. Honestly with me i played the game in the middle of the night while i was sleepy and completely forget about O.D honestly.
