That's how we did in the days of SOTN. That's how real true gamers do. we don't ♥♥♥♥♥ and moan that other people are able to play the game as well. we play to our own tune and we take pride in our own accomplishments.
In the past years we had a few good metroidvania games, Hollow Knight and Salt and Sanctuary for example.
While I understand your enthusiasm for Igavanias (my personal favorite games ever) and the unique flavor they have, this isn't correct. "Metroidvania" simply means that it's a side-scrolling exploration game with sections that unlock with upgrades as you progress. It's meant to be a broad term. "Igavania" specifically refers to the Matroidvania Castlevania games that Igarashi worked on so it's a better term if you want to be more specific.
Bloodstained was almost too easy.
Also curious as too which games claim to be metroidvanias that you are refering to. I hope you aren't refering to Hollow Knight and Salt & Sanctuary.
Yes, this. Thank you.
Deadcells is more of a Rougelike game than Metroidvania game because you're limited to one run per try.
But Hollow Knight deserve to use the name Metroidvania because it was about exploring the world for stuff.
I'm so excited for the rise of the "metroidvania-lites" title, due to people feeling the need to split hairs
Here are some examples of Roguelikes:
Ancient Domains of Mystery
Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup
Tales of Maj'Eyal
Nethack
Doom Roguelike
Dungeons of Dredmor
Caves of Qud
Here are some examples of RogueLITEs, ie NOT Roguelikes:
Dead Cells
Spelunky
The binding of Isaac
Rogue Legacy
FTL
Darkest Dungeon
Risk of Rain
Nuclear Throne
Shooters are Shooters and Platformers are platformers regardless of how closely they adhere to their progenitors.
Unlike popular belief, genres does not tell you whether a game is good or not. Imagine if Lord of the Rings was under history in the library, that would be pretty annoying when you are trying to look for history books, but it doesn't mean the book itself is bad, it's just not a history book.
you say dark souls is reasonable, but i don't personally think it's reasonable for a game to ask me to do an hours worth of play to get to a boss again after some silly error.
Hollow Knight however is absolutely a Metroidvania. I'd throw Ori and the Blind Forest, Timespinner, Axiom Verge, and Guacamelee in there too.
While we're talking about Dark Souls, I consider that an ARPG with Metroidvania elements. Acquiring new abilities to reach new areas is an important component for this genre, and Souls just has keys.
Also your post about Hollow Knight not being a Metroidvania simply because its not exactly like an Igavania is silly
