This game is actual metroid vania.
I have been getting really sick and tired of all these games coming out recently claiming to be metroidvania, when they ARE NOT. it has confused some people as to what metroid vania games actually are like.

hint: they are like super metroid and castlevania symphony of the night.

I am so glad that this game has come out and has similar gameplay and similar level of challenge. so many people complaining about this who basically don't know what they are talking about. I tell you what, all those roguelike games like dead cells and unforgiving games like hollow knight... that are NOT metroidvania games, they are hardcore metroidvania mimic style games.

it's misleading, because I love super metroid, metroid fusion, SOTN, all hte GBA castlvania games, and the DS ones, all those games are excellent, yet the majority of pretenders that come out recently, I can't stand them because they have stupid punishing mechanics like dark souls etc.

How can it be that a fangirl of metroidvania games doesn't like all these recent games that claim to be metroidvania? because they AREN'T.

so all those people coming in here and expecting this type of hardcore difficult gameplay, you need to show yourselves to the door, because IGA is in the house now. If anyone can say what a metroidvania game should be it's him. you guys need to shut the hell up and take your lesson from the master.

This game is the real deal. The difficulty is correct. it's not meant to be super hard to get through. depending on how you approach it, you can breeze past the monsters and have no problems. personally, I always shy away from magic. I just watched my friend blast past every monster using the magic. that's fine, but me personally, I like to use pure combat and refine my skills and my tactics. and if your skills are even higher, if you're pro or whatever, then find your challenge. play with no armour, play with no saves, play with no healing items. choose your poison.
That's how we did in the days of SOTN. That's how real true gamers do. we don't ♥♥♥♥♥ and moan that other people are able to play the game as well. we play to our own tune and we take pride in our own accomplishments.

Which titles are you referring to (the "fake metroidvanias")?
In the past years we had a few good metroidvania games, Hollow Knight and Salt and Sanctuary for example.

While I understand your enthusiasm for Igavanias (my personal favorite games ever) and the unique flavor they have, this isn't correct. "Metroidvania" simply means that it's a side-scrolling exploration game with sections that unlock with upgrades as you progress. It's meant to be a broad term. "Igavania" specifically refers to the Matroidvania Castlevania games that Igarashi worked on so it's a better term if you want to be more specific.

There's alot of Metroidvania in Dark Souls too tbh, what exactly is stupidly punishing about Dark Souls, it extremely reasonable if anything.

Bloodstained was almost too easy.

Also curious as too which games claim to be metroidvanias that you are refering to. I hope you aren't refering to Hollow Knight and Salt & Sanctuary.

Of all the criteria one can use to define the metroidvania genre, imho, difficulty is one of the worse one. Metroidvania's are about game's structure and presentation. But difficulty? Meh.

Yes, this. Thank you.

Hollow Knight is a Metroidvania type game. It just focus a bit more on difficulty.

Deadcells is more of a Rougelike game than Metroidvania game because you're limited to one run per try.
But Hollow Knight deserve to use the name Metroidvania because it was about exploring the world for stuff.

I'm glad the title "metroidvania" is becoming the next "roguelike" in terms of people bickering stupidly over what does and doesn't qualify.

I'm so excited for the rise of the "metroidvania-lites" title, due to people feeling the need to split hairs

I symphasize with you but I find it ironic that you complain about some games gets called Metroidvania when they shouldn't and then you call Dead Cells a Roguelike. It's not, a rogueLITE perhaps, but not a roguelike. Hint: Roguelikes are like Rogue, a very old game that is turn-based, top down, grid-based, procedurally generated and permadeath.

Here are some examples of Roguelikes:
Ancient Domains of Mystery
Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup
Tales of Maj'Eyal
Nethack
Doom Roguelike
Dungeons of Dredmor
Caves of Qud

Here are some examples of RogueLITEs, ie NOT Roguelikes:
Dead Cells
Spelunky
The binding of Isaac
Rogue Legacy
FTL
Darkest Dungeon
Risk of Rain
Nuclear Throne

I mean genres shift and evolve as all things must. This game is a deliberate throwback to the start of a genre but the games that have naturally shifted and changed into the more modern format aren't 'pretenders' of any sort.

Shooters are Shooters and Platformers are platformers regardless of how closely they adhere to their progenitors.

It's inevitable. We use genres to quickly explain what a game is, if the genre in question is too diluted it becomes useless. Like what has happened with 'RPG' which is why we now have wRPG, jRPG, cRPG, Action RPG, Turn-Based RPG, MMORPG e.t.c e.t.c. because only saying RPG doesn't tell you very much anymore.

Unlike popular belief, genres does not tell you whether a game is good or not. Imagine if Lord of the Rings was under history in the library, that would be pretty annoying when you are trying to look for history books, but it doesn't mean the book itself is bad, it's just not a history book.

I hope we don't confuse the term punishing with difficulty. I feel that the difficulty of dark souls is not insanely high, it is the punishment for failure. i would personally get on much better with dark souls if you could have a checkpoint before bosses. mainly because I just don't have time to do all that over and over again. many games these days aren't asking much of us in terms of skill, they are mainly just making unreasonable demands of what you have to do each time you fail.

you say dark souls is reasonable, but i don't personally think it's reasonable for a game to ask me to do an hours worth of play to get to a boss again after some silly error.

I'm with you about Dead Cells.

Hollow Knight however is absolutely a Metroidvania. I'd throw Ori and the Blind Forest, Timespinner, Axiom Verge, and Guacamelee in there too.

While we're talking about Dark Souls, I consider that an ARPG with Metroidvania elements. Acquiring new abilities to reach new areas is an important component for this genre, and Souls just has keys.

Dark Souls bosses really dont take long to reach once you've explored the area. The biggest offender of this by far is Bed of chaos (and Priscilla, kind of), but I really dont remember any other case. This is a bigger problem in DS3 but not Dark souls 1

Also your post about Hollow Knight not being a Metroidvania simply because its not exactly like an Igavania is silly
