Why?
It blocks damage from enemies and bosses ALL the time. Its damage is just icing on that beautiful cake.
Start running. >:o
Bloodbringer: While it's a nice callback to the Sword familiar from Symphony of the Night, as an actual familiar it's pretty lackluster. It wastes a lot of time winding up and being hammy before attacking, which often results in a miss against most opponents. The main benefit to leveling it up is that the familiar's level directly influences the Bloodbringer sword's attack power, capping at only a couple of points lower than the strongest sword in the game, Blue Rose. Unfortunately, it takes far longer to get a familiar to max level than it does to get the materials for any of the ultimate weapons, making this familiar's gimmick horribly outclassed. I'd personally class this as "Baby's First Familiar", only use it if you have nothing else to put in the familiar slot.
Silver Knight: The earliest you can obtain this one is right after killing Craftwork if you defeat it quickly enough. Unlike every other familiar in the game, you get grades for this familiar's shard by finding special stands hidden throughout the castle (maximum grade of 5 or 6 in NG, you need NG+ to max it). It's tied with the Dullahammer Heads for the best combat familiar in the game. Unlike it's competitor, the Silver Knight will sometimes block projectiles and, as its level rises, will occasionally use a light-elemental magic attack. This is the one I personally use for all but three boss fights.
Carabosse: This is one of the two support familiars in the game. She can attack, but it rarely does more than single digit damage unless you get her a lot of levels. Her main ability is that she can use familiar-exclusive healing items on you if you get into red health or have a status effect. She'll also point out hidden areas and breakable parts of the environment. Overall, I'd say she's pretty bad as far as familiars go, for the following reasons: 1. All status effects are temporary and are very rarely a problem, 2. It's much quicker to heal yourself by opening the menu, using the Healing shard, or casting Blood Steal than it is to let Carabosse heal you, and 3. Her ability to detect hidden areas is rendered moot by the Detective Eye shard. Despite all this, she is good for one thing that no other familiar can do: getting the Recital achievement.
Dullahammer Head: This is by far one of the best familiars in the game, especially at grade 9. It's tied with the Silver Knight for the spot of best combat familiar. It can do a ton of damage really quickly and can even hit enemies that are offscreen. The shard's grade increases the number of heads in the swarm, the rank increases the damage they do, and their level influences their aggression (Getting this familiar to high levels will result in a lot of effortless screen clears just for being in a room). Despite how good it is, it has one fatal flaw: the heads are treated as projectiles by the game. Some enemies and bosses (notably Zangetsu) are programmed to auto-guard projectile attacks, which really hinders this familiar's effectiveness. Personally, I use this familiar while traveling around to help deal with the various enemies in my way and to deal with three specific bosses.
Dantalion: This is the second support familiar. Like Carabosse, it can perform a weak attack that rarely hits higher than single digits. Unqiuely, this familiar can cast a spell on you that buffs your STR (and by proxy, attack power). Leveling this familiar seems to increase the frequency with which it casts the buff, but it's not very reliable even at high levels. Just like Carabosse, this familiar's abilities are rendered moot by other facets of the game; specifically all the weapon expertise shards, Optimizer, Augment STR, Augment CON (which for some reason boosts all stats except Luck when stacked with itself), Money is Power. and Red Remembrance. I'd suggest only getting this familiar when going for 100% shard collection.
Buer: This is an interesting take on a combat familiar. It follows you around and does contact damage to anything it bumps into. Hilariously, you can smack it to send it flying into enemies. It will even rebound off walls and obstacles within tight spaces. Like every other familiar, it has its drawbacks. In this case, since it's classed as an interactive entity by the game, if the Buer gets in front of you its body will block most projectiles you fire (the only ones it won't obstruct are projectiles that go through the terrain, like Throwing Axe and Bone Toss). While I personally wouldn't use it, I still recommend it for anyone looking for some variety in their fights.
Anyway Buer is great with some creativity
Scythia is smart and Gets It. :3
If only you could disable the noise they make when they warp back to you... When you have five of them it's obnoxious enough to swap familiars just to not hear it anymore.
