Look, we're playing a Castlevania clone.

If there is one typo patrol horn you don't toot, it's people typing in Vlad's last name by habit.

This is one (perhaps rare) instance where this guy is helping
NOTE: I'm going to revise this, and it's long. Adding upgrade mats if I can find them listed after I post this. Format is shard name, enemy name, shard type, thoughts on shard, materials required to upgrade. Locations are listed in bold, with enemies listed under them.

Galleon Minerva:

Flame Cannon (2%) from Cannon Morte. Purple shard, flame shotgun. Not the best one, but great for when you get it.
1-3: Gunpowder, 4-6: Gunpowder, 7-9: Ruby, Cannon Scrap

Entrance:

Heretical Grinder (4%) from Blood Grinder Knight. Purple shard, close range channeled damage, basically a boss melter. Also, as you'll be farming Blood Grinder Knight, keep an eye out for the Spiral Sword weapon. The stats don't tell the whole story, as this weapon is a MULTIHIT weapon.
1-3: Iron 4-6: Steel 7-9: Sword Fragment

True Arrow (4%) from Barbatos. Purple shard, non-elemental shotgun attack. As with all shotguns, it really shines when used at close range, but the spread can also be used to hit enemies from a distance while they're still stationary (looking at you, bats...)
1-3: SP Rounds x3 4-6: Dreadful Rag 7-9: Sinister Rag, Silver Bullets

Garden of Silence:

Alchemic Bounty (2%) from Zagan. Yellow shard, gives you a chance to craft multiples of an item. So, for example, say you craft Item A, which takes materials B and C. Alchemic Bounty procs, you've spent B and C, you now have TWO (or more later) of Item A, and you can break one down to get your materials back so the item was made for free. This is also useful when you have a single copy of a material but multiple things that use it. Save, craft, reset if you only get one. Remember to have this equipped when crafting, even though maxing it out makes it always active (like all yellow shards), because equipping it while maxed means the bonus STACKS!
1-3: Silver x9 4-6: Gold x9 7-9: Alexandrite x4, Bixbite x4

Dian Cecht Cathedral:

Welcome Company (4%) from Poltergeist. Red shard, one of THE MOST OP shards in the game. It creates rotating portraits that surround and protect you, dealing damage to things that come close.
1-3: Oak 4-6: Oak, Walnut 7-9: Oak, Mahogany

Augment Int (4%) from Demon. Yellow shard, boosts INT, which increases the effectiveness of pretty much every shard in the game.
1-3: Ectoplasm 4-6: Ectoplasm, Holy Water 7-9: Ectoplasm, Fiend Eye

Familiar: Dullahammer Head (2%) from... Dullahammer Head. Green shard, the best familiar in the game. I love the sword familiar, but this easily outclasses sword even when sword is maxed and at 99 and this isn't even close to that. This familiar is heads (ha!) and shoulders above all the other familiars.
1-3: Stonethaw 4-6: Stonethaw, Monster Bird Hair 7-9: Stonethaw, Lion Lord's Mane

Towers of Twin Dragons:

Beast Guardian (5%) from Wolfman. Blue shard, hold it down and it summons a shield in one direction. Combine this with Directed Shield from Shield Outsider and you have full coverage.
1-3: Sinister Pelt 4-6: Sinister Pelt 7-9: Fiend Pelt, Demon Pelt

Teps Oceus (4%) from Celaeno. Purple shard, superfast lightning that tracks enemies and goes through walls. Great for farming, and also killing small mobile enemies.
1-3: Emerald 4-6: Emerald x2 7-9: Emerald x2, Gold

Directed Shield (5%) from Shield Outsider. Purple shard, summons a damaging shield, use this with Beast Guardian for full coverage, though I think there are some things that neither block. Could use info from others here.
1-3: Iron 4-6: Steel 7-9: Mithril

Bridge of Evil:

Bunnymorphosis (4%) from Lili. Blue shard, turns you into a Lili. Fast kicks, good damage at this point, and is one of two transformations that I know of, the other being Shovel Knight form which is activated by equipping Ex Shovel Armor (3%) from Shovel Armor in Forbidden Underground Waterway.
1-3: Lili Ears 4-6: Lili Ears, Lili Tail 7-9: Lili Ears, Queen's Tail

Flying Dagger (4%) from Assassin. Purple shard, gatling gun attack. More hits at range compared to shotgun shards because it lacks spread, but also still great at point-blank.
1-3: Dreadful Rag 4-6: Durable Rag 7-9:Eastern Fabric, Crimsonite

Dian Cecht Cathedral (again):

Optimizer (4%) from Ocypete. Yellow shard, increases attack speed and damage no matter what weapon type you use.
1-3: Thunderbird Plume 4-6: Flight Feather 7-9: Bovine Plume

Chaser Arrow (4%) from Leraje. Purple shard, tracks enemies. I prefer Teps Oceus for range and speed, but this can also be used shotgun style for more hits (at close range Teps Oceus tends to ♥♥♥♥ around and not land all hits, even when the only enemy onscreen is a large one).
1-3: HP Rounds 4-6: Dreadful Rag 7-9: Sinister Rag, Silver Bullets

Forbidden Underground Waterway:

AQUA STREAM (10%) from Deeseama. Purple shard, you need this to progress. It allows you to travel underwater.
1-9: Don't bother

Detective's Eye (4%) from Seeker. Yellow shard, reveals breakable walls.
1-3: Toad Eye 4-6: Sinister Eye 7-9: Demon Eye

Hidden Desert:

Tis Raiff (4%) from Vul'sha. Red shard, light element, multihit. Good on its own, but you can also use this (and Diamond) to make Tis Rozaiin at the Alchemist, which is a holy element beam weapon. Tis Rozaiin isn't the best shard for that slot, but it's a fan favorite, so it gets a mention.
1-3: Silver 4-6: Platinum 7-9: Diamond

Inferno Cave:

Summon Hellhound (4%) from Hellhound. Red shard, area of effect damage, great range, phenomenal damage. It's a tossup between this and Welcome Company for the title of "Best in Slot: Red Shard".
1-3: Gunpowder 4-6: Ruby 7-9: Fiend Pelt

Augment Luck (4%) from Deathtrap. Deathtrap is a mimic enemy. Luck helps you farm, helps you crit, maybe helps with other things. You'll want to have this equipped when farming for shards, and either this or Pickpocket when farming for items. You need Augment Luck and Gold to craft Augment Gold at the Alchemist, which makes enemies drop gold, but ALSO upgrades the coins candles drop. Pair Augment Gold with Accelerator for quick gold farming using candle breaking if you don't feel like using Alchemic Bounty procs to make money.
1-3: Ectoplasm 4-6: Ectoplasm, Holy Water 7-9: Ectoplasm, Dragon's Wrath for Luck or Gold for Gold

Pickpocket (4%) from Gusion. NOTE: This entry is getting moved once I edit this list for accuracy in regards to who you encounter when, as the Beastiary is a bit iffy there. You can encounter this guy in Livre Ex Machina by pulling out platforms that contain him, and he shows up later in both the Underground and Oriental Sorcery labs. Pickpocket is a yellow shard, and it gives you a chance to "steal" items from an enemy on hit, meaning they might drop their items BEFORE death, or even multiple times. Equip this and a low damage weapon that hits very fast if you want to try to farm items quickly, though I prefer Augment Luck, as killing things faster and counting only on death drops means you're also farming souls and experience faster than you would while using this with a low damage weapon setup.
1-3: Lili Tail 4-6: Lili Tail, Witch's Tears 7-9: Lili Tail, Queen's Tears

Oriental Sorcery Lab:

Shuriken (4%) from Ninja. Red shard, great shotgun spread.
1-3: Dreaful Rag 4-6: Durable Rag 7-9: Eastern Fabric, Crimsonite

Chisel Barrage (15%) from Master Carpenter. Master Carpenter is a miniboss in a locked room that requires Carpenter's Key, and Chisel Barrage is the best offensive directional shard in the game. It throws a constant stream of chisels and does UNGODLY damage.
1-3: Steel 4-6: Steel, Damascus 7-9: Steel, Platinum

Den of Behemoths:

Accelerator (100%) from Harrier. He's a blue ninja, and this is a blue shard, and you get it if you beat him in a race. It lets you run SUPER fast, and gives you crazy horizontal distance on jumps when in use. You deal damage to things you hit while running, so you can speed through rooms and turn lower-HP enemies into roadkill. Also useful for running through candles to get gold drops from them, as it breaks them. Did I mention you can use this on New Game+?
1-3: Flight Feather 4-6: Hellhorse Mane 7-9: Hellhorse Hoof

8-Bit Nightmare:

8-Bit Fire Ball (4%) from Eight Bit Skull. Purple shard, shotgun, crazy damage. Many players swear by this. Keep in mind the only (non-glitch) way to leave the 8-Bit Nightmare is to kill the boss or to use a Waystone, so keep some of those in case not-Dracula wrecks you... though he shouldn't, if you've been picking up the earlier shards. Also, keep waystones on you anyway, as you need 3 for an NPC quest and at least 1 to teleport back to base if (or rather WHEN) the game sticks your ass in a wall when you change rooms.
1-3: 8-Bit Coin 4-6: 8-Bit Coin x2 7-9: 8-Bit Coin x2, 16-Bit Coin

All I need for a speed run with 0 damage on Nightmare is StandStill/SummonHellhound/Directional Shield/Optimizer ( For Eternal Blue) this is a new game+ run.
In a clean Run all I need is Directional Shield + Dulla Heads (Familiar you get at the start on the boat) and a Gun for 0 damage in Nightmare until I get my other shards towards endgame.
Chair.... nuff said.:yellowrubberduck:
I've seen lots of lists that label 'summon hellhound', at 9/9, as the single most damaging shard in the game.
I'm going to try it out after this break.

I farmed the chair to 9/9 just to see the other types you can make, lol. I even got the black ice OD throne from it.

the last few steps take Gold

The water horses drop a weapon that looks like an anchor. You can disassemble it for gold.

Everything you craft is then sold in the shop. So disassemble the gold and re-craft it.
No mention of Void Ray on this list I see. Probably not as powerful up close as True Arrow, but Void Ray never left my main kit when I got it from the Nether Dragon in the library (and you can later farm it in the Lair of Behemoths when the dragon comes back as a normal enemy, making it one of the only, if not the only, boss shard you can upgrade without needing to NG+). It's damage for MP cost isn't good if you hold it, but if you just tap the button real quick, you'll cut down on MP usage considerably and it can also clean a room of trash pretty fast by quickly spinning the stick. Time your button taps and you have a very long range, near instant damage beam at your disposal. Even being dark-based isn't a big deal, not many dark resistant enemies from what I could tell.

Teps Oceus. In fact, it is right there in the voice acting.

Me: How am I ever going to farm this room of annoying flying mooks hiding behind walls, without mussing up my fabulous dress and hairdo?
Miriam: T'at's Obvious!
Me: Damn straight.
I like the Void Ray.

Only problem with it is that you get it very late, but it is pretty damn powerful and can delete enemies almost instantly

Another nice shard is Riga Storaema (or however you spell it) which annihilates anything on the ground, though it doesn't do much for flying/aerial enemies but that's why you have the Void Ray for! :ghlol:

EDITED TO ADD:

Flame Cannon is super good early, especially if you upgrade it a bit, that thing wrecks pretty much anything you fight, including bosses.

Man, people really sleeping on Flying Daggers. IMO, it's way better than Chisel Barrage. Just machine gunning down bosses with it.

The most recent post in the thread you're replying to is from early July of 2019. Consider that there may have been some balance changes since then.

I do remember, being one of the people who contributed to this thread and having used both of those shards, that CB was better than FD 10/10, every damn time, because it was intended to be, as CB drops from an optional boss and FD does not.

That was back when I still played.
Flying dagger is/was amazing. I am one of the few that seriously recommended it back in the days but this is also the time where people like to keep boasting that welcome company is the best shard out there... Although I used WC occasionally, it is not the best shard for medal farming and so to me, this is not really that good of a shard other than to kill those pesky dullahammer heads while exploring.
Bolide blast is another one of those sleepers. You don't need to rank or upgrade it, it by itself does ludicrous damage... if it weren't for that stupid bug with it.
Flying Daggers at 9/9 does almost as much damage as Chisel Barrage at 9/3, but FD allows you to summon them all with one press whereas CB requires you to stand still and hold. Personally I'd rather fire the daggers and keep moving, but I can see arguments for both.

My most used are

Red: Welcome Company, Riga Storaema, Shuriken, Chair
Blue: Bunnymorphosis, Healing (with Chair), Accelerator
Purple: True Arrow, Heretical Grinder, Void Ray, Tis Rozain
Yellow: Whatever I don't have maxed out, right now it's Drain, but usually Words of Wisdom (glowy eyes are cool) or Money Is Power
Green: Carabosse, Bloodbringer, Silver Knight. Dullahammer head is very good but I'm not a huge fan.

If you wanna cheese, your loadout should be:

Welcome Company
whatever blue you want (maybe beast guardian if you haven't gotten Accelerator yet)
True Arrow, Heretical Grinder for bosses.
Yellow is preference, but Optimizer/Words of Wisdom are good.
Dullahammer.

For farming, I recommend the Gold Cross (8-bit weapon). It's holy element with petrification. Spam force blast. Also throw on Augment LCK, obviously.

For general fighting, I switch between the Encrypted Orchid (8-bit weapon) for the lightning damage, Eu's Sword (8-bit weapon) for more overall attack, or my strongest Katana for the absolutely broken techniques. Tbh the Katanas are just too good.

Honorable mentions:

Red:

Summon Hellhound - sucks mana but wrecks everything on screen
Head Flail - good early slapper

Purple:

8-Bit Fireball - high damage shotgun, but slow, plus the 8-bit nightmare is a pain when you can first get to it
Flame cannon - worth upgrading, can carry you through early game

Directed Shield. It is THE best combat shard in the game. It carried me through nightmare mode essentially by itself, and I even got almost every boss medal with it. Again, on nightmare mode, where you're stuck at Lv 1 for the whole game. Welcome Company is weaksauce in comparison. About the only combat shards I can think of that comes close are super spoiler endgame shardsTime Stop + Chiseland by that point you're almost done with the game.
