Other Castlevania games like this game, also had such an ending. If you blasted through the games without actually exploring every single inch or enough of it, anyway, you would get the bad ending. Which only implies that you need to continue to explore more. More bosses to fight, more clues to be found. More plot to be seen.
i had to equip a very weak weapon from midway through the castle up to that point and unequip all my combat passives and damage boosting armor
I mean, clearly he was just a pawn in a bigger game but no, let's just leave everything behind and let the towns people die as more demons swarm them. I bet Miriam didn't even return any of the books she borrowed! And who's gonna feed the hungry granny or avenge all the fallen towns people now!?
So technically, your "warning" is the Game Over screen, because it doesn't make sense to think it's the end of the game when you get that, since there's no closure (or in our terms, a "good" ending).
While it might seem disappointing now, that just means the game is telling you to work a little harder to get the real juice out of it. After all, the game is so short that its real value is in subsequent playthroughs with increased difficulty, so you're only at the tip of the iceberg. Lucky you!
To be fair, most parts of the castle look like it will lead to a big boss of some kind (and who doesn't want to fight a new challenging boss?). Plus there's like areas below the staircase that one might think would be accessible if exploring a few rooms further beyond the staircase.
Heck, I even expected the final boss to be behind one of the locked doors or would be much harder to reach rather than being something you just stumble upon when exploring the map in what feels like early to mid game.
