Clarification about getting Passive Shard to 9: this DOES NOT make them Permanent; it add a Permanent?

So, I invested heavily in my Katana Expertise shard, eventually crafting the unfortunately-disappointing Raikiri katana (and for once my sadly-low-ranked-for-want-of-silver Alchemic Expertise shard procced,) and... Well!

I gained a Katana Expertise Permanent/Skill shard, which is very nice; but, my Katana Expertise Passive shard remained where it was.

Both of them can be active at once, and both of them do increase the attack power of my Katana. Is this expected behavior, or did the game glitch out in my favor?

No, it isn't a glitch. The passive version of the shard and the skill version of the shard are supposed to be stackable like that.

Shards are never consumed. Even when you're using them in crafting, the quantity doesn't change in the materials cost panel like 1 -> 1 instead of 1 -> 0.

I didn't think it was going to consume it, I just thought it was going to convert it wholesale.

I'm of two minds. On the one hand, I wanted to reclaim my Passive Shard slot to slot something else; on the other hand, extra damage is always nice.

It allows double stacking of shards. For example, double stacking the Augment Gold will eliminate anything less than 100g from dropping.

There's only one passive shard that doesn't stack with its skill shard version, to my knowledge.

The one that finds breakable walls. Nothing improves when you have both equipped. Not even the item pickup radius.
