In a weird way I actually found the bad singing kind of charming given the context, although I don't think that was intentional...
This always comes off as so ridiculous to me. If you don't speak a language, you can't judge the bloody voice acting. This is why people make fun of weebs.
I guess kids these days don't even know what bad voice acting is. You must have missed out on the PS1 era.
Coupling the fakest Cockney accent with peak levels of adult voicing a child was the worst idea. Nothing else really stands out as particularly offensive because of it. Dull, yes; offensive, no. I have to admit I wasn't really feeling it with Solid Zangetsu. Not bad, just... wrong.
But you never know, maybe the general lifelessness in the English voices is just from someone really wanting to emulate every aspect of Symphony of the Night.
Yeah adults doing children's voice is a mixed bag sometimes it's very well done and other times it's done very poorly. Like with Maria in Rondo of Blood from the Dracula X Chronicles I felt the English voice of her was very well done.
I do agree about the quality of VA in context of the crowd funding. I can see the relationship of funding to quality.
Voice acting is important and difficult to achieve. I think the standards have never been high in video games, save for some. I feel it's a cost cutting opportunity for companies. Maybe good voice acting is very costly. Games are about gameplay first, and voice acting is not primary and is decent garbage on average. I am under the impression that people think Japanese VA is better overall because of this.
EDIT:
Actually, which VAs are in that version? Robbie's version of Alucard is way better than whomever they used for the XBOX port, IMO.
That's actually my prime issue with Miriam. They sort of went for it again, but unlike Alucard, nothing ever really gets to Miriam enough to get her to break her calm. She displays more casual emotion than he did, but for someone who makes such a point about still being human, she never really has a moment of human weakness. They made her such a strong character that she became a weak one.
The English VAs are passable. I'd have liked more effort, both in the performances, and in the design. The NPCs could have have more than one thing to say when you turn in quests. Susie in particular is bad in this regard as she doesn't even have unique dialogue for each quest like Lindsey does.
The fairy I thought was supposed to be bad. Maybe that wasn't the intent.
