Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition

Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition

Does Deus Ex has controller support?
I was wondering, does this game has native controller support?

I know a lot of people might think this is a dumb question since this is an Immersive-Sim and people think this type of games are "Only meant to be played with Mouse and keyboard". But even other games in the genre like Thief, Dishonered, Prey and Fallout: New Vegas do have great controller support.

And not to mention is kinda hard for me to play games with Mouse+Keyboard as my hands start hurting a lot. So yeah, I was really wondering if I could play this with a controller.

The game doesn't exactly have native controller support.. There are parts of the ini files that mention direct input which I'm assuming is the old joystick/game pad input method, before xinput became a thing.. Slim chance you'll be able to get any of that working though.. Your better off getting some third party software like pinnacle or joy2key to remap your controller buttons and thumbsticks to keys and mouse control

It's a very old game that is no longer supported. It's pretty playable on Steam Deck and Steam Controller. Even more so, if you get the Revision mod on Steam. You can play vanilla Deus Ex with a few improvements from Revision and have achievement and Steam Cloud support.

All we can hope for is a FAITHFUL remake for this game when the time comes, if the time comes.

Thank you sweetie!! Tho I later found out about Steam input where you can asign radial wheels while holding a button and then using the right stick to select any action/key on the wheel. So I can basically bind all the needed keys into 2 radio wheels depending on the things I need, and just use the touch screen for the hacking sections.

Would you mind explaining how you did this like I'm a child? I am trying to play on Steam Deck but I don't know how to do any of this technical sorcery you mentioned.

Depends on how easy you want it to be as there are 2 methods and while one is very easy and only takes seconds to do so, one is way more complicated than the other but gives you more options.

If you don't mind sacrificing your trackpads as nothing but menus then just press the Guide/Steam button and Edit the layout of the controller when you are playing the game you want to edit. From there is as simple as going into the trackpad menu and selecting their behavior as instead of trackpad or mouse (the name changes depending on the game), just select the "Radial Menu" option.

It will then ask you to give a name to your Radial Menu. When you are done, go to the bottom of the menu on the left and select the option "Virtual Menus". Then select the Radial menu you just created and on the left just press the option "Add virtual menu entry" as many times as you want. In the options just select what actions you want to have in the menu and select the keyboard buttons you want the game to press when you let go off the menu, and just make sure to not select anything from the virtual button in the middle or you are going to be pressing that thing by accident on a stick (though they are very good for Square Menus on the trackpad).

After that you can even add icons to the buttons either from Valve by default or custom icons ported by you. And once you get used to the icons you can even disable the top menu that tells you what button/key does the icon presses when you let go of the trackpad. And if you want to, you can even change the size of the radial menu.

And that's it, now every time you circle around your fingers on the trackpad you will see the action menus you created for that specific game.

-

Now if you want to use a radial menu while still being able to use your sticks and tracktracks to look around whenever you want to, while only making the radial menus appear when you keep holding a specific button. Then you are going to have go to the Action Set menu. In it there is going to be an Action Set called "Default", just press the Gear icon ( :blackmetal: ) and select "Add Layer". And give it any name you want.

Now go to the buttons menu and select the button you want to use to turn it into the radial menu button, preferably the back buttons of course. On it select the button and it will ask you what you can to do with it, and instead of turning it into a button, press RB on your Steam Deck to go the the Action Sets options. On it select the option that says "Hold Action Set Layer", and select the action set layer you just created with the name you gave it. Just accept it and to finalize, select the Gear icon ( :blackmetal: ) next to the button you just changed, and where it says "Regular Press", change it to "Start Press".

Doing that will make it so that when you hold down the button you selected, will make Steam input change to the action layer and will modify what your controller does as long as you keep a hold of that button.

Now press RB to take you to the Action Set Layer you just created and make sure that on the top left corner it says the name of your Action Set Layer (the custom name you gave to it) right under "Default". From there, go to the buttons menu again and select the same button you did at the beginning, but this time, INSTEAD of selecting "Hold Action Set Layer", you will now select "Remove Action Set Layer". Accept it and to finalize, select the Gear icon ( :blackmetal: ) next to the button you just changed, and where it says "Regular Press", now change it to "Release Press".

That will make it so that when you finally let go off the button, Steam input will take you back to your original controller config.

And while still being in the same Action Set Layer (again, make sure the top left corner has the custom name you gave it), go to either the Stick or Trackpad menu and do the same exact steps from the first method of turning either the stick or Trackpad into a radial menu, create your radial menu, etc.

And you are done!

-

The first method is OBVIOUSLY way more simple and only takes a couple of seconds. But the second method is much better for lots of actions as it allows to you create as many menus as you want with the press of a button while still leaving the Sticks and Mousetrack to aim and only changing to virtual menus when you want to.

And the second method also allows you to have multiple configs so that while holding a button, you can make every other button press do something else than in your default button config from when you are not pressing anything, which is perfect for third person shooter games with controller support and that you want to play in controller mode when moving around and interacting, but switch to mouse and keyboard controls with Gyro aim when you hold down the aim button.

-

So yeah, if you want to try the second method but find it too complicated, you can shoot me an add and I can show you screenshots to make it WAY easier.

Oh wow, thanks so much for the detailed breakdown!

Yes, I'd definitely like the screenshots to follow, if you don't mind! I'll add you now.

Thank you!

You can play the PS2 version, the interface was obviously made from scratch and is surprisingly very good.

I wish the PS2 didn't invert X-Axis on some games (DUNE).
