Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition

Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition

What do Deus Ex fans think of Human Revolution?
I guess it was asked many times. I read some forum posts a while ago where some DX fans stated that they did not like HR. I wonder why?

Although I am not the biggest DX fan (I personally prefer System Shock II) I like it well enough and I also enjoyed HR a lot. I think HR is a nice modern almost-Remake which improves the AI and gets rid off some unnecessary Elements => I do not miss swimming! ;)

Shanghai was a level design masterpiece and the side quests are a lot of fun!

So, what do DX fans think of HR?

"I do not miss swimming!" - What's wrong about that? Was it the lack of orientation? That might rather be tied to a too low FOV and sitting too far away from the screen / the screen being too small. Personally, I like realistic avatar simulation, like jumping, crouching, mantling, and also swimming.

Worse and underwhelming in every way.
Gameplay was fine, but the story was cookie-cutter and souless for me.

Deus Ex is my favorite game ever... DXHR is like my 5th or so favorite? Mankind Divided I'd probably rank similar to DXHR with much better gameplay, but a fairly worse story. I have to beat Mankind Divided atleast one more time to be sure though.

All my opinion ofcourse... so don't get in a tizzy.

Ways HR it was better.

-The art Direction The art direction wasn't particularly strong in the original though.
-The shooting, and AI. Human Revolution still isn't particularly good in these areas though.

Ways I think it was the same.

-I am in the minority. I thought the stories in both were excellent. In different ways. The original was really X-files like. The new one is more similar to like GiTS with Blade

-Music was excellent in both. (Mankind Divided was slightly worse)

Where it was worse

-Level design or different ways to do things that are not vents was not near as good in HR. Mankind divided is a substantial improvement in this department. At some points it's amazing and I think even better than the original, and at some points theres still too many vents. (For Mankind Divided I move this about the same).

-No Multitools - This was fixed in Mankind Divided and Directors Cut.

-Skill points should still be in it.

-Forcing you to only upgrade certain augs (Mankind Divided Addressed this, but poorly)

-Location Damage should still be in it. Maybe not in the way that it was in the original, but they should react to it. It would be cool if you could like blow an augs leg off.

Where I don't Care

ATM's
Swimming,
Melee (though this should probably be in it), But I thought the dragon's tooth was kind of stupid and debalanced the game, and ultimately I don't use melee so I don't really care.

MD has multitools. But Director's Cut? Do you mean DX:HR? Doesn't have multutools. Or what do you mean?

It has automatic unlocking device. (Which is essentially a multitool).
It was in DX:HR as preorder bonus which was really stupid. Then integrated into the DC.

Right, forgot about that one. Thanks.

HR simplified a great many things—which is expected, since it is a console game—but I liked it. What I really didn't like that stealth play through even with all augmentations made towards it was still a Wait for the Battery Recharge Icon: The Game. Knocking out anyone in DX3 requires to wait ages for the battery to crawl its way back up. In DX1, I used the same baton and prod I got during the first minute of gameplay and didn't have to wait for them to say "okay, you can swing me again now, I am rested"…
I used to love it thinking it to be in my top 5 games of all time...however, unfortunately, I don't think it's that great in the past 2 playthroughs. It's just dull and uninteresting. Can't explain it. Really dissapointed. No idea why I changed.

Whether it's a console game or not is irrelevant in today's age, especially in gameplay terms.

Oh I agree the story in HR was bad. I really stopped caring midway through. And some scenes were a bit too much Michael Bay Actiony - but then again it is a AAA-Game that has to please a large audience so I can forgive that - but not the weak story telling.

I loved that I was teaming up with Tong in DX - changing sides. I missed that in HR too. Some dynamics in the narrative would have been nice.

So yeah I agree that it does not have the immersion DX had, but I still think it is a very solid game. DX is not perfect either (dragons tooth, enemy AI, hated swimming).

Oh, and one last thing: I loved the music in DX. I thought HR music was a bit bland - I hoped for a catchy tune in Shanghai similar to DX Hong Kong, but no. Background music basically.

Did I fall asleep and did console controllers finally move past the two analogue stick and 8-10 button design? Because if not, then gameplay will remain limited by its own control design and the analogue stick's limitations. Because with removing the built-in software auto-aim, well, this happens: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJN1VvfHO4M

Not to mention map design has regressed significantly. There's no point in sniper rifles in HR because every level/room is so small and in your face. In OG DX you could do, you know, actual long distance sniping.

That should not be a problem on console games any more, ever since designers realised how to build large open populated worlds even with limited memory. The cramped levels were probably a conscious design choice to promote the close-quarters stealth game style.

another complaint from me: I think HR is too easy. I don't like the "press Q for melee attack" mechanic. I was "afraid" to play it on high difficulty, but later I regretted my decision to play on medium. I prefer the classic melee attack in DX, where you still need some precision and timing to succeed.
