Fate of Paul Denton
I know that Paul Denton appears in DX: Invisible War, but he died in my playthrough. Is the appearance in IW based on my DX saved file or what

There's no save file transition.

The first game was made for PC and later ported/hacked down to fit one console. The second game was originally intended for consoles (hence the much simplified mechanics, user interface, and level sizes that were smaller than a building in DX1). You could not really get any chance to even import a save file, even if we disregard that the engines were totally different and would have needed quite the conversion to import decisions.

From what I can tell, you can cause Paul to live or die in the first game because of your actions. So good job killing off your brother. :) And Paul is definitely in the second game. So it would be a continuity problem for some people. My guess is they either didn't notice or didn't care when they wrote the second game.

But if he died in the first game and the game read your savefile he wouldn't be alive in the second game right? So I'm not 100% sure I understand the question. But it's good to know someone else is playing this game.

He lives if you blow yourself up the moment UNATCO busts down the door. People often think he cannot be saved in a no-glitch pacifist (minus Anna) run, but in reality, the moment the door is burst, the script that teleports the player to the next level upon death is active already.

Huh, I never would have considered blowing myself up as an option.

And I think I have only ever fought myself out of the 'Ton once in the past 17 years, even though I haven't seen Paul's corpse since like 2006. It is just a lot faster and easier to get killed there fast than trying to do the long route. (Heck, I cannot even remember now what Günther says in the park, it has been so long I saw that route.)

Paul canonically lives for IW. Doesn't stop Alex from killing him if you go that route.

Fight is a rather generous term. I used all my LAMs to set up Trip Mine Hell in the corriders outside his apartment. And lobby. I don't recall having to fire a bullet.

I've been playing the GMDX mod and he died even though I stayed to fight with him :(. I've never had that happen before either. Not sure what the trigger was. I died in his room if that was it. Was an unpleasent surprise as I've always stayed to fight so he could live.

I think the trigger is based off the conversation. If it helps, try the method I suggested, it will seriously thin out the herd if not entirely. Also remember to clear the lobby, or else Paul still dies.

As long as you "die" fighting UNATCO, Paul will survive.

Not in GMDX. In GMDX Paul can die (and probably will) unless you really guide him to the front doors of the 'Ton. And he is already damaged, so he dies QUICKLY. He will wait in his room, however, until you get down the stairs. So make sure that you kill everyone on the first floor, then shoot people from the balcony or throw down some grenades. Once Paul starts running for the front doors, stay with him and make sure that you kill the three soldiers in the hallway, because each one is strong enough to kill Paul. It is a bit of a frustrating mess in GMDX, but in the original, where you just needed to sneak out of the front door for Paul to survive, it isn't any better.

As for Paul Denton in IW... maybe he is a clone...
