Rendering and Steam Overlay issues.

Okay.. I'm obviously not a PC gamer so bear with me.
I recently bought Deus Ex 1 (GOTY). My laptop can run it easily, almost too easily to the point where it's causing problems.

The issue is mostly in the rendering device I choose to run:

1- Direct9X: the game is too frigging dark. The brightness setting slider in-game doesn't even work; doesn't change anything at all. Everything else is fine.

2-Open GL: The game runs too fast. JC runs insanely fast and the dialouge lines cut-off mid-talk. Everything else is fine.
I looked up solutions to this one. The Kentie-something launcher limits the resoultion to low levels and I have to change them each time I start the game.
The DuesEx.ini file with the speed modifer is nowhere to be found in my system folder, and other similar files have no "GameSpeed" options to change.
Everything else is fine.

3- The software rendering (which is apparently the worse one) runs the game super smoothly. Everything is perfect, BUT it doesn't support the Steam overlay. I can't take screenshots and I can't see the FPS counter. (the screenshot thing is what's really bothering me).
AND yes, I checked multiple times to see if the steam overaly is enabled in the settings, and I ran steam as an Admin. Still, no overaly.

For now I'm sticking with the software rendering becasue I just wanna f**king play the damn game. I wasted two days already trying to fix it.
But I figured I'd ask for help. Anything I can do? It kinda sucks being this limited.

I don't know anything about the Steam overlay, or even its purpose, but your DuesEx.ini file is just called DeusEx, and it has the configuration cogwheel icon on it. ( It should be right under DeusEx.exe). You can right click to edit it. There's another file named User, which is also a config file - you might find something useful you can change in there. Might not hurt to copy them somewhere first.

I just re-installed and it's playing fine here. I only get a choice between DirectX and Software rendering though.. DX works perfectly.. Steam overlay seems fine.

Maybe try again without Kentie's launcher?

I play at 1920x1080 just by changing the viewport settings in the "DeusEx.ini".

I tried a combination of you guys' soultions and the game works perfect. The lighting is good, the sounds are good, and I can use the steam overaly, so thanks! I don't know which one in particular worked but I designated the most encompassing tip as the soultion.
