As for gold - remember to sell any surplus stuff you have as trade - as long as it is not food (that should be used for quests). Planks and polished stone are very simple trade goods, as are clothing.
Typically I generate most of my gold by supplying my villagers - they purchase an enormous amount of stuff. Note that higher tiers of villagers buy more, but work less...
If you are too far in the negative, consider abandoning some land, or tearing down some expensive building that you really don't need - just selling berries to your people should get you back on your feet.
