30GB Install For 30MB Update

I've got an interesting issue with my Hell Let Loose Steam installation. When updating the game, steam reports only requiring 30MB of data to download, but then requires approx 30GB of installation.

Throughout this process Steam reports no network activity, only 30GB worth of disc activity. This has happened for the last two updates and I've never seen anything similar with any other games in my library. I've not reinstalled the game yet to see if that would help.

This seems really odd to me and just want to know if anyone has experienced any similar problems with the game. I'm suspicious as on both occasions this has happened the game has required 27.2GB of what I can only assume is moving files around before the game will run. Maybe I have a corrupt installation?

I am seeing the same thing right now.

30MB update, downloaded nearly instantly, and then a 30GB LOOOOOOOOOONG-ass installation process.

I think this happens when they send you a bunch of files and then, after downloading, there are some instructions as to where they go and that is what takes time.

it is certainly a weird way of updating game files, but is on the other hand highly preferable to a 30 GB download if you ask me

Yeah agree with your thoughts there. Interesting as people who I play Hell Let Loose with have not seen the same thing, but this may just be down to chance with Steam doing it in the background.

At least good to hear that other people are seeing the same thing!

Unfortunately, this is something that can sometimes happen with Steam with different games.
Often it will not download 30GB worth of data but just the data it needs to.

Still happening, now requires 40gb available space for a 300mb patch.

Yeah, HLL has always done this and is quite stupid. Not sure what the dev is attempting to say but HLL is the only game I have that does it. They must try and patch and then, well, i dont know. verify the game files but require the game size worth of free space on your hard drive.
