Fatal Error, LowLevelFatalError, and No Report Crashes
At this point, this game is unplayable for me, or at least, not worth my time. I’ve had issues with “Fatal Errors” since I first download the game back in January. I resolved them for a few days after figuring out I had a bad driver install and fixing it. It has gotten out of control since the 14.8 patch, and NVIDIA’s driver release on 3/5/24.

**I will comment on this thread with a dxdiag file, after replicating these issues, this afternoon. I am at work and on mobile at this time.

**HLL is installed on my 512gb NVME M.2. It is the only application on there aside from my OS, and there is ~230gb of open storage remaining.

Here is what is happening:
1. I’ll load the game up, select my server, and attempt to load in. I’ll get to the loading screen where it shows what map is in rotation, with the HLL logo/loading indicator in the bottom right hand corner. It will cycle the loading animation once or twice, stop, and crash me to my desktop. Sometimes I get an error message saying “LowLevelFatalError [File:Unknown] [Line 139] - Shader compilation errors are Fatal”, other times not. It sometimes takes 10-15 minutes of repeatedly trying to join, regardless of what server, to get into a game. Luckily I have purchased/earned VIP in a few servers, so I don’t have to spend 30+ mins in queue each time trying to load in.
2. When I do get in, I’ll get 30-45 mins of gameplay before crashing with a “Fatal Error!” message. I’ll have to repeat the process in paragraph 1 to get back in.
3. When I do get back in, I’m often met with an account recognition bug. The game will show me as “notacop_1”, Lvl 1, with no progression, not “notacop”, Lvl 70ish, with almost 250 hours of progression. I have to restart the game in order to clear this bug, repeating the process in paragraph 1.
- Regardless, I lose all experience gained up until the first crash. I’ve been tanking recently and my squad and I have been dropping 75+ kill games regularly. If I crash in the last 5 mins, for example, I will no longer have a combat score, offensive/defensive score, or support score from my reps. My “Personal Stats” page will still show my kill count, KDR, etc…, but I gain no XP from the 85 mins I played. Hence why I say, not worth my time anymore.
- After these crashes, my config file will also be corrupted/overwritten. This means all cosmetic/class choices will be returned to default, as well as any settings (mostly VOIP sliders) returned to their defaults as well. The “config.ini” file is not set to read-only either.
4. Say I do make it through a match, I will almost always crash out on the loading screen for the next match, beginning the process anew at paragraph 1.

Here is what I have done so far, in the order I did them:
1. Ran dxdiag and returned APPCRASH for “HLL_BugReportUploader.exe” and “HLL-Win64-Shipping.exe” returning “ntdll.dll” and “nvgpucomp64.dll” as faulting modules, respectively.
2. Went into BIOS and removed any overclocking and returned them to defaults, that being my CPU Boost and RAM XMP.
3. Cleared my Shader Cache to attempt to fix “LowLevelFatalError [File:Unknown] [Line 139]”.
- Unclear results on this, the frequency of occurrence has reduced, but still occurs roughly every 1/10 boots.
4. Cleared any Steam Exceptions I had set. No results.
5. Deleted my “config.ini” file from within the “WindowsNoEditor” folder, booted the game to start menu, closed, and reopened. No results.
6. Ran a DDU and removed all of my Graphics Drivers. Preformed a clean install from NVIDIA GeForce Experience. No results.
7. Removed NVIDIA GeForce Experience and all pertaining files. Ran a disc cleaner (CC Cleaner).
8. Ran DDU again, and preformed a clean install of drivers from NVCleanstall. No results.
9. Verified game files on Steam.
- Returned no errors.
10. Ran “sfc /scannow” in Admin CMD.
- Returned no errors.
11. Ran CrystalDisc on my m.2.
- Returned no errors.
12. Restarted Steam as an Admin, and launched HLL as an Admin. No results.
13. Whitelisted all files related to “HLL”, “HellLetLoose” and EasyAntiCheat (EAC), listed on other posts by T17, on my Antivirus (McAfee and Malwarebytes) and WindowsDefenderFirewall. No results.
14. Temporarily uninstalled my Antivirus and disabled WindowsDefenderFirewall.
- This seems to have resolved the issue “HLL_BugReportUploader.exe” fault and its faulting module, but I’m not certain.
15. Ran “EAC_Setup.exe” from within the HLL game folder. Uninstalled, reinstalled, and repaired. No results.
16. Ran “EAC_Setup.exe” from the EAC main folder. Uninstalled, reinstalled, and repaired. No results.
17. Deleted the “EAC.sys” file, booted the game to main menu and closed it. No results.
19. Repeated steps 15 & 16. No results.
20. Uninstalled the game, ran CC Cleaner, restarted Steam (Full log out/log in), reinstalled the game. No results.
21. Repeated steps 3-19. No results.
22. Preformed a clean windows install, removing all files. Reinstalled the game. No results.
23. Repeated steps 3-19. No results.
24. Gave up, and went to bed because it was 3:30 AM EST, and I had to be up for work at 7:30 AM, and had spent the last 6 hours doing all of this for the issue to keep replicating itself.

***OF NOTE: Anywhere I state “no results” following a step I completed, I did what I said, restarted my computer, loaded the game and attempted to play, or played until I received another crash. The majority of crashes were fail to desktop, where I would be in the game window on the map details loading screen (as detailed earlier in the post) one moment and my desktop the next. If I did make into a game, I was most commonly met with the “Fatal Error” popup, without any kind of error code presented. The “LowLevelFatalError [File:Unknown] [Line 139]” error most commonly presents while the “movies” are playing or during the “Connecting to online services…” screen before making it to the main menu, but has occurred while in game. After each crash I would run dxdiag and make note of the crashing application and its faulting module. As stated before “HLL_BugReportUploader.exe” and its faulting module “ntdll.dll” and “HLL-Win64-Shipping.exe” and its faulting module “nvgpucomp64.exe” appeared in almost every return, with “HLL_BugEditor.exe” seeming to resolve after turning off my Antivirus and WindowsDefenderFirewall. I would like to find a work around for this, as I am not comfortable not having *some* form of antivirus active.

During all of these crashes I have not received a single detailed crash report from anywhere. It’s been my experience that Unreal Engine 4 will provide a detailed crash report when their engine fails. I have not received one. All of the “Fatal Errors” have provided no crash code to help diagnose, aside from the “LowLevelFatalError [File:Unknown] [Line 139]”, which I can find no mention of online. All other crash report information has come from dxdiag. Please let me know if there’s something I need to toggle to begin receiving more detailed crash reports.

A friend told me I should also include this information: I’ll watch my performance tab on task manager as all of this is going down. No error message crashes and “LowLevelFatalError [File:Unknown] [Line 139]” crashes are preceded by normal, under load graph patterns, across CPU, RAM, GPU, and Storage, followed by a drop to idle patterns. “Fatal Error!” crashes are preluded by a massive spike from normal patterns on the 3D Rendering Graph on my GPU tab, followed by a precipitous drop to idle patterns. This occurs regardless of graphics settings, be it Low to Ultra.

Please help me resolve this issue. I’ve put nearly 250 hrs into this game since January, almost all of that time is game time since I don’t let my computer idle endlessly (especially with a process like this open), and I just want to get back to getting off work, relaxing and playing with my friends until the early morning

I think I may have resolved it, but I will continue to update if something comes back up.

I used a dedicated registry uninstaller a friend recommended and found a ton of left over files this afternoon, after uninstalling through steam, and running CC Cleaner. I cleared all of that, re-ran the DDU one more time with the New Graphics Card setting (read somewhere this wipes EVERYTHING, and sure enough had to switch to integrated graphics because my PC didn't recognize my card until I reinstalled drivers), and used nvcleanstall to get *just* the graphics/audio, and PhysX drivers. I also cleared out my shader caches again of any leftover files between using DDU and nvcleanstall.

An hour later and were running smoother than before, and without any crashes except for the very first time I launched the game after doing all that. With any luck it will have been a bad combination of corrupted files hidden throughout the registry, a bad graphics driver, and just some awful timing.

Besides one or two hiccups, I was able to play 3 matches back to back, with only one crash on the first load in.

About 10 hours of game play post fix. Still seem to crash on the first server join attempt after turning my PC on, but then completely stable for the rest of the session. Here is an updated dxdiag post fix: https://justpaste.it/adf7c

Hey notacop,

Thanks for getting in touch - sorry to see you've had some issues with a crash in Hell Let Loose.

Just to confirm, has the crash been resolved since trying the last steps reported or are you still experiencing the same crash?

If so, we can investigate further so please do let us know!

Team 17, I would say mostly resolved. It still happens once, after every first boot of my pc, on my first time entering a server.

Hey notacop,

Thanks for getting back to us.

I can see from your DxDiag that you have both an onboard Intel graphics card as well as the dedicated NVIDIA card - can you please make sure that you are attempting to run the game through your NVIDIA and not your Intel card? To do this:
  1. Type Settings in Windows Search and press Enter
  2. Click on System
  3. Under the Display tab, scroll down to the end and click on Graphics Settings
  4. Select Desktop App and click on Browse
  5. Find the game's location, select the .exe file and click on Add
  6. Click on Options, select High performance and Save
Then please retest the game and see if the issue persists.

If so, Can you please follow the steps in the link to perform a clean boot?[team17.helpshift.com]
A clean boot is being used to start your Windows device using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs.

Once this is done please launch the game to see if the issue still continues.

If the crash no longer happens when your start up programs are disabled, we would recommend enabling these programs again one-by-one to see if there is a specific program that is causing conflict. To re-enable your start-up programs:
  1. Follow the steps above again but enable all of your programs and services.
  2. Then click Apply and restart your computer.
Get back to us when you can and let us know how you get on with this.

Team17 Support
