not necessarily, but you will find that alot of the more (serious) people dont want you in a squad. Communication won't work too well in this game unless spoken.

People will tell you that you don't need a mic.

The truth is: If you really want to enjoy the game and help your team you absolutely have to be able to talk at least a minimal amount. The game is so much better with proper communication. Once you understand this you will either talk or play something else.

You'll get used to it. It's not as though the SL is doing roll call or you have to. Respond to orders and report enemy activity when seen.
The game is built around teamwork and communication. If you absolutely refuse to use a microphone and communicate with others, then there are games better suited for you than this one.
At minimum, you could stick to infantry squads, not play officer, and only communicate when actually necessary like if you've seen something, or to say when your abilities are up, etc.

Even if you're shy it will be a massive help if you just say basic things like acknowledging orders, spotting enemies, etc. Don't need to have a full blown conversation if you don't want to. It will be fun!

You don't need to be able to talk back, but, you can use text based chat with your squad only or entire team with different controls. The game is at it's best with communication and coordination within squads and within the command chat. Not many game's compare... but, without them the game is a brutal slog of frustration or getting dominated despite your best efforts. Mic is not required (unless leadership role) but communicating is required.

Not necessarily required but in my experience it's expected/required by most squads, very simulation type game like Squad. If you don't want to use a mic maybe try Battlefield V, it's extremely cheap right now, or use this as a way to get over your shyness
While it is not required to play HLL (to answer the question) it is highly recommended to use one.

im close to lvl 60 and no mic. its doable
I was just lead by a mic-less squad lead that was over level 100. They knew what they were doing and marked stuff we pointed out. I don't recommend going without a mic and leading but we stuck around in their squad.
I ll say u better have a mic,but truth is 70%player(maybe?) don't have mic or don't talk, and they still play ,so it does not matter

Everything that had been said above BUT also there are servers (community servers) where, if you dont use a mic, you will be kicked out.
Also you cant really play some roles without a mic, that is Squad Leader, Tank Commander, or Battlefield Commander. Specifically Battlefield Commander, will in most cases get you kicked if you dont use a mic

Most of the time it also sucks when nobody is talking.
Playing without a mic is like running while pooping. Technically possible , but less than ideal .
