I got HLL free from Epic as well, and frankly, I'm intimidated by posts like yours. I want to play this game as it was intended, but I'm going to need some help as even after watching a few hours of vids, and playing with each weapon and class in the practice area for each faction, I'm sure I still have no idea how to actually play this.
It's not my fault that most of the kiddies who got the game for free are ruining the game. They will likely give up in a short time as this game is far too foreign to them. No ammo counts. No crosshair. No bullet sponges. No cool loot or purple weapons. They will all quit soon.
Arma Re-forger?
If only the others had that attitude. I'd check out a couple how-to videos on Youtube about tweaking the performance and how to play the game since there are some decent ones posted (and I'm sure someone will post a wall of text of them soon :)) I recommend starting in the gun range to try out things like tanks and the various weapons since it'll give you an idea of which roles you want to rank up first since guns are locked down to role and the rank in that role.
When starting matches, bring up the player list (<Tab> usually). Look for a squad lead or better yet, a squad full of high level players. The level is beside the names and join it. If the squad is locked and they don't accept your request, don't take it personal, there are plenty of reasons for that such as needing someone experienced or they are reserving the slot for someone else.
Some other tips would be to remap your map key (<m> usually) near a common button either on the keyboard or mouse. That way you can easily pull up the map and see what's going on. Don't attempt to jump on Commander, Squad Lead, Spotter, or Armor (unless they are willing to teach on the fly) since those roles should be handled by players who are well versed in the game, or at least have others helping them out throughout the match. This game is much easier to play using communications, the default keys are X=command chat, C=squad chat, V=proximity chat.
Let them learn. The ones that don't will quickly leave.
Grumpy gatekeeping clowns should be the least of your concerns honestly. This game is nothing but a BF clone (when BF was still good). And once in-game you realize they're just a vocal minority. People may be a bit weary when their team ignore the basics for a whole 1 hour game, but they're always up to explain and help.
Do we have way too much canon fodder at the moment? Sure thing. But you definitely can play it efficiently with no team no mic no problem once you understand how it works.
