how can i watch some matches with a birds eye view? i would like to study some battle flow and strategies.

Another way to get a handle on the flow of battle is to remap the map key (default 'M' key) to a key/button that is easy to press quickly. I probably look at the map for a fraction of a second every ten seconds which gives me more situational awareness than the commander most of the time :)
