That's why I'm asking if there are non-voice-chat methods of communication and coordination, like there were in every team-based game for ages until everyone suddenly decided that immersion wasn't important, and you should be fine with hearing the voice of a 15-year-old Texan coming out of the character model of a 30-year-old German infantryman.
Minimap pings? A voice line wheel? Anything?
On the other hand you don't have to talk at all so long as you listen in. If I ask you to drop supplies and you use the communication wheel to acknowledge rather than speak then that's all good. I would like you to speak in the squad but I don't need you to if I still get some form of response. However, if you take a role like support then continually ignore me, don't follow instructions, don't drop supplies etc all it will get you is a kick from my squad, which will happen more than you will like if you ignore everyone.
I'm always mindful that when people don't speak on my squads it may be a medical reason e.g. hard of hearing and that shouldn't prevent them from enjoying HLL. Maybe they're younger and can't afford a mic yet etc so I'm good with people generally not talking. it's people who take critical roles then don't stay with the squad, wander half way across the map by themselves, don't drop supplies when you need them but refuse to swap out of the role to let someone else take the role etc that are the problem.
This idea about immersion I don't get. Why are certain things immersion breaking but dying and then immediately coming back to life and teleported to your last position seen as totally normal?
For example, If you are playing support and don't respond(you can use text chat to respond or just walk towards my marker), you will be kicked pretty quickly from my squad. Spawns gotta go up, with or without you.
No audio at all (IE if you want to play with voip disconnected): Do not buy/refund/uninstall. These guys don't spawn where we are moving as a group and do their own thing, they can go to someone else's squad
Despite what the youtube sniper videos will say, communication IS the game. Otherwise the enemy storms the last point every time.
The whole HLL is vastly enhanced by proper comms; calling out enemy positions, supply drops, spawn points, coordinating defense / offense etc... get a mic, calibrate it properly in the Audio options (this is important!) and use it.
Should you? No, these games I cited are usually the worst ones, the most boring ones.
The whole deal of this game is coordinating your squad and then your squad with your team, the more communication, the better the experience, so yeah, if you intentionally wan't to not even hear your teammates, it's not the game for you.
I think you'll find most of HLL a quiet bunch, only using Squad chat for necessary short messages. Very often the truck ride out to the front line is totally silent. Other times it has amusing banter. If you get a Squad that you don't like the banter of , you can just switch out or go to another Server.
