"TKs happen", i do not get that argument. Sure accidental TKs (someone runs into a shot or bombing run) but this scenario is not accidental, it happens because new player is shooting because he does not know it is friendly player.
as an SL i push deep into enemy terretory to set up an OP just to be shot in the back by some random noob, wasted 10 min of my life on a push that failed because devs cant set max nameplate to 1000 meters by deafult.
Teamkills happens mainly because of lack of communication. Sure it is an issue with unorganized servers, with unorganized squads (= squad members all over the map and not with SL) and with unorganized players (=not listening, not following orders). I do not share the experience you have. Sorry to hear you keep getting shot in the back and you feel like wasting 10 minutes of your life in a video game because of this.
I will post a screenshot later, can't right now get to the game. Clearly the community is divided in terms of what the default settings should be. That's a fact. As a server owner, I have wished since day 1 that there would be a server setting which could override player preference and I could force shorter markers for anyone playing in our server. And also as a server owner I see the frustration in the logs that happens after these new player teamkills. But people will learn. People will become dumber if the default settings are increased (500-1000M). I have witnessed that happening in another game and franchise that changed and increased the default markers from previous title. People became lazy and teamkills happens still even if the default distance in longer.
Personally I have played with 50M markers since day 1 and rarely teamkill because of not recognizing targets.
What an incredibly inelegant solution and mechanic!
But obviously old icons were an issue since they have been swapped so I can only speculate the change might have to do with feedback of icons not being noticeable enough. Yet, they are still an issue to this day for some players.

So asking improvements on this aspect isn't so crazy and not out of the table. Not to mention some of new players have no idea that there is currently setting for name distance.
Also, setting it to 500m is unnecessary. 250 and even lower still covers almost all firefights you'll be in so that you won't shoot at firendlies.
What they need is a way to mute those icons with a key - either as a toggle or delayed reset (say they come back on after 5-10 seconds). The clutter on maps like carentan where half your team could be on the other side of town but still have visible icons is awful.
And yes agree even static or timed Toggle Key would be nice so you dont have to watch icon spam if distance is set more than 50-100 if you prefer that.
You do know TK is an issue, accidental is fine but if some dude keeps on doing it then they will retaliate on TK. I dont have issues name tag set at 500m, so i dont know why it is an issue.
Default 500m.
