@devs: please increase default for nameplate view distance to 500
when a user installs the game the 3 settings for "nameplate view distance" should be set to 500 by default. I am sure this is an easy update that could be included in next patch (update 8).

This is the first thing a new player is told anyway after he TKs couple of players. This change would eliminate those TKs.

Agree, when there is sale or free weekend we see surge of new players and I can default say I need to always remind and advice new players how to increase plate distance during matches, TK:ing will happen during these sales/events.

No. Keep it as it is. The game isn't supposed to be hud war. Teamkills happens. It's not that big of an issue in a game that lasts for 1,5 hours. People will learn.

Well, if nothing Tips while loading map wouldn't hurt so that people at least know there is a option for it to be adjusted.

That does not make sense. It is on by default but only at 200 meters so hud is there anyway. New player has no idea that further then that friendly will not have a nameplate and that is why these TKs happen. If you want to reduce the distance later you can. But a new player has no idea about this setting.

"TKs happen", i do not get that argument. Sure accidental TKs (someone runs into a shot or bombing run) but this scenario is not accidental, it happens because new player is shooting because he does not know it is friendly player.

not big of an issue?
as an SL i push deep into enemy terretory to set up an OP just to be shot in the back by some random noob, wasted 10 min of my life on a push that failed because devs cant set max nameplate to 1000 meters by deafult.

If a new player teamkills because they don't know better, it is accident.

Teamkills happens mainly because of lack of communication. Sure it is an issue with unorganized servers, with unorganized squads (= squad members all over the map and not with SL) and with unorganized players (=not listening, not following orders). I do not share the experience you have. Sorry to hear you keep getting shot in the back and you feel like wasting 10 minutes of your life in a video game because of this.

I will post a screenshot later, can't right now get to the game. Clearly the community is divided in terms of what the default settings should be. That's a fact. As a server owner, I have wished since day 1 that there would be a server setting which could override player preference and I could force shorter markers for anyone playing in our server. And also as a server owner I see the frustration in the logs that happens after these new player teamkills. But people will learn. People will become dumber if the default settings are increased (500-1000M). I have witnessed that happening in another game and franchise that changed and increased the default markers from previous title. People became lazy and teamkills happens still even if the default distance in longer.

Personally I have played with 50M markers since day 1 and rarely teamkill because of not recognizing targets.

Making the game into a literal crowd of dots on your screen like you're some super soldier with augmented reality neural inputs in NOT the way to go and makes the game devolve into shoot whatever doesn't have a dot floating over their head. This isn't Dots Let Loose.

What an incredibly inelegant solution and mechanic!

Just bad UI design by developer I have to agree with that statement @Mr.President. It was better before HUD/UI patches less noticeable. And if Devs want to go this way which they have introduced, its better go all the way and inform players that there is a option so it can be adjusted or let server owners config servers.

But obviously old icons were an issue since they have been swapped so I can only speculate the change might have to do with feedback of icons not being noticeable enough. Yet, they are still an issue to this day for some players.

This guy gets it. Thank you. And exactly the screenshot I was going to get now - surely this is not the view we want from a game that describes itself "a hardcore World War Two first person shooter" (store page). Devs knows this. The half of the community requesting default markers to 500-1000M should start realizing that too.

Markers can be set far its not a issue (their current design is an issue itself and how they function). They should resize themselves by the distance from player to marker instead one constant size. One option is also fade by distance from player to marker.:steamhappy:

So asking improvements on this aspect isn't so crazy and not out of the table. Not to mention some of new players have no idea that there is currently setting for name distance.

I have seen some people say that the opposite approach is needed and that markers should be set to 0m. I'm sure you're thinking thats rediculous and thats what I originally thought. Apparently with them set that low, they only show up when you hover over someone, no matter how far away they are. I haven't tried this myself yet, but I plan to at some point. If this is true, it would actually be better to put them this low, as then they don't clutter your screen at all and you can still see if someone is a friendly before you shoot at them.

Also, setting it to 500m is unnecessary. 250 and even lower still covers almost all firefights you'll be in so that you won't shoot at firendlies.
Lorem Ipsum Oct 20, 2020 @ 1:32pm
If you make keeping long tag distances a miserable experience then the logical outcome is that people shorten their tag distances to make things less miserable. Right now it's a miserable experience on some maps.

What they need is a way to mute those icons with a key - either as a toggle or delayed reset (say they come back on after 5-10 seconds). The clutter on maps like carentan where half your team could be on the other side of town but still have visible icons is awful.

JellonaVesa Oct 20, 2020 @ 6:03pm
@Lorem Ipsum you are right on the money and that is what has been done effeciently with new icons. Make them so un-usable that almost none uses larger values than default value and devs obvisouly realize how bad system is since is set to that by default.

And yes agree even static or timed Toggle Key would be nice so you dont have to watch icon spam if distance is set more than 50-100 if you prefer that.

You do know TK is an issue, accidental is fine but if some dude keeps on doing it then they will retaliate on TK. I dont have issues name tag set at 500m, so i dont know why it is an issue.

I concur.
Default 500m.
