What are the flares/flare guns, what is their purpose and how to aquire?

It's the level 2 spotter (sniper squad lead). If you have ever seen a circle on the map showing enemies (red dots), that's a friendly flare you are looking at. A secondary role is flare gun execution style where the enemy burns up but it's tricky to pull off :)

It's a circle that reveals enemies on the map. Note that the "dots" are a snapshot in time and do not capture movement.

its one of the most powerful tools in the game. in the hands of a good recon squad , ( you know, one that isn't solely focused on sniping kd:r quickscopes kills) , it is absolutely lethal . the flare gun can be fired over a hotly contested area and reveal conentrated enemy positions and even reveals enemy halftracks. an able recon spotter will then relay this information to the commander and may make a difference in taking a point.
