For the people going to your HQ, in 95% of cases it's likely Recon going to kill your artillery in middle spawn and shouldn't be your concern. Unfortunately in the very few cases it does happen, if your HQs are getting camped there's not much you can do unless someone manages to build a Garrison elsewhere. There are servers that do not allow camping HQ outside of middle spawn so if you want to avoid it 100% of the time, you could play on those.
Circling back around to the first paragraph, really this all comes with time. My main advice is to observe the map and look around the main points of fighting to see where teammates are, see what spawns are lighting up red, or look for pings that indicate an enemy presence. This should help with getting surprised by the enemy.
^ This and waste your precious time you have here on this earth following suggestions and reading from armchair gurus who have a power/being intelligent fantasy
aim off for it. if your going to play back line, no one does in a pub match. middle HQ will be recon target as it has the arty, until the last objective. then really you need a squad at each unlocked HQ to delay the insert for recapture.
to deal with it you need a back line. just a 2 man squad, to patrol your back garrys and HQs.
its a good way to learn the game and also be useful to your team. you shouldn't really leave arty to deal with recon them self. if they are not on the gun they are no use to the team.
hope this helps.
EDIT: if you are going to play back line put your OP about 100 mtrs away from middle HQ then you can warn arty of recon approach if you not in the area
2: Use your map to identify where your team mates are looking. (The point of their triangle is the direction the are looking) good indicator of where the enemy is or at least was last seen
3: Use your map to determine where your friendlies are dieing. This will tell you generally where the action is.
4: Arty will kill you and so will tanks. Nothing you can do about it. Just accept it and move on. In case of tank , try a different route.
5: Communication. When you see an enemy , ping it and say in coms "Enemy at *numbers on compass* . if your whole squad does this everyone's k/d climbs.
6:never stand up unless you have 3/4 cover around you .
7: don't sprint across fields, use the ditch or trees on the edges.
8: Watch ditches and trees along edges of fields.
9:Be the bush
i realy have to contradict this one point, everything else is helpfull.
if you tell compass bearings its no use to most people, same with left or right!
its only applys to them who are standing so close to you that you feel their nosebreath.

if the squad is close enough, directions (w/e/n/s) and the ping is far better to understand. also maybe describe someting close like behind the shed, at the well, tank wreck... things like that.
but keep it short and dont make a novel out of it XD
some also use the map grids and numpad keys to narrow it down.
at least .. please, pretty please, with a cherry on top - DONT say right or left or the compass bearing numbers ^^
so, to get back on topic:
sorry OP, there is just nothing that realy can beat experience and wasted time in this game. and if you play with totaly incompetent mates, they also are just usefull as a bad example for how not to do it ;)
alot of nice tipps are all around this forum, if its not a "cheeetaaahs everywhere" post or similar bs.
also good vids out there to get some good input, but again you still have to do that yourself then ingame.

have fun and good hunting
North is always North , East is always east , and 145 is always 145. compass directions are always helpful. And if you're NOT so close to your squad you can feel their breath then wtf are you doing ?
what i said - give a direction, not a number on the compass. north is better then 360 (XD), because if im not right on your backpack i will have another bearing! and i would have to search you first, befor knowing what the hell you mean.
that only works if you have people who talk to you instead of mute you when you join the squad also if you cant take more than 5 steps from spawn your logic breaks down pretty fast so yeah
unfortunately this strategy only works if both sides are following the rules and play the game which most done most are trolls waiting to ruin the game for you so sadly your advice only works if everyone in the game abides
