...I think its just about money... considering the rise in hackers recently...
That is kind of ridiculous. The devs dont want to run their own servers and want to leave it up to the community to host servers...fine. Plenty of games do that. But make it so anyone can host a dedicated server. I am already willing to pay the electric bill for running a server for them, but now they want to extort money from me for helping them out? No thanks.
You're kidding yourself if you think its that way for any other reason besides them shifting costs.
most steam games do have local/hosting capabilities, and with the exception of console oriented developers [EA, Ubisoft] almost ALL titles come with the server hosting software.
...and its not a "decades old" business model, not including the server host file has only been a thing for MAYBE the last five-seven years, at most.
and OP never said anything about the developer hosting their own servers [BUT THEY DO, THE COMMUNITY SERVERS ARE OBVIOUSLY OWNED/OPERATED BY BLACK MATTER], he was asking where the files were located so they could host their own.
read more, project less?
They clearly signed an exclusivity deal with someone.
Im sure they deflect with something something code security. Most of these comments dont understand what that even means or are wrong. This is about $$$
There's no valid reason or excuse for not having it.
The server still has to be run through steam. It's not like it's a complete free for all.
A pity that it is not possible to create a dedicated server, it is not about money, most communities have their own machine where they host their servers. These are hardly going to rent any server. Clearly, it's a business model that I don't think will be successful in the long run. It will limit the interest of many clans that are usually the ones that manage to maintain interest in the game for the longest time.
Hope they rectify soon as the game seems to be worth it.
with them selling the IP to team17 without a word to the community about if they're still in creative control or not, i fully believe that the desired intent of rental-only servers was based in greed. I thought this indie dev studio would do right by their playerbase and stay true to their vision... guess I was the gullible fool as they've totally sold out.
if you're trying to [poorly] suggest that OP look for the game hosting files from a game hosting website, thats not how reality works, and is exactly how Black Matter keeps the core server files from being in "any rando's hands" ...only server hosting companies Black Matter/Team17 are doing business with have access to the actual server files.
Now if we're talking about Counter-Strike, it ships with the server hosting software bundled and you just have to set it up yourself. Thats not how they shipped/built HLL.
What ever the intent you still have to work with the resources/tools you have available.
are you high or something? you're not making much sense... OP was wanting to be able to host a server without RENTING one. You're implying "just rent one" how is that in any way constructive or useful in this discussion
...dafuq?
