Engineer role seem useless, what am I missing?
A moderate to sub par load out, little utility, and AT & AP mines despawn after death, and are little use. They just don't seem to have a practical role that's not served better by others.

What am I missing?

Hmmm... Wasn't aware they did not remain once placed. Not good.

They do remain. Max 4 if I recall.

The part about engineering is you have to consider them logistics or sapper depending on your loadout. You should be running supplies to the front line and building nodes and fortification or on the offensive taking out enemy emplacements with satchel charges. The rest should just be to keep you alive at best when you do engage in combat.

The most fun I've had was building defences.

Yeah those mines can be nasty. I think somebody did a test, and if every person on the team cycled through their squad's engie kits... you could potentially have 300+ mines on the ground.

Now imagine offensive, ever member of the team falls back to Hill 15 in cycles on engie kits, or north pass, or dugout barn, etc. and lays their full quota of wire and barricades and mines on the approaches. It'd be impossible to get through.

Imagine 300+ mines in the broken stumps and fog of hurtgen.

Each engie gets 6 AP mines and 4 AT mines to lay down. It takes a few lives to do so, but if you lays them on hedgerows and ♥♥♥♥ on the approaches, you're guaranteed a Squad leader or two will hit them, since they usually go first.

I've seen some pretty crazy fortresses and no the mines do not despawn. It will tell you in an indicator toward the bottom you get 4 AT mines and 6 AP max but you don't carry that many so you either have to respawn or ask an ammo carrier support subclass to help you out and they carry supplies so it's a good class to bring along anyway.

I loved the engineering class and played it as much as I could till I realized nobody gave a ♥♥♥♥ about anything you do except putting down nodes. Which of course was a struggle to get anyone to give you supplies to even do that.
I would build massive defensive fortresses that not a single person would use to defend with ( except the enemy when they capture the point) i would beg for supplies to build nodes that someone would ninja to make a useless garrison or would be overrun in 5 minutes.
I would play sapper and try and destroy enemy strong points that nobody would attack. I would knock out enemy tanks that just respawn in seconds.
The engineer class is useless for the same reason all classes are. Everyone is a Rambo doing their own thing and 99% of teams just suck.
Play post scriptom if you want a real experience in any class.

if the mines are permanant then that's somthing, ''Reddit' seems to think they despawn after death.

Nodes, ever heard of those?

No? Seems like a lot of people haven't heard of those or their importance.

Fortifications? Blocking off entrances with barbed wire or belgian gates, setting up bunkers, ap mines, normal mines (that do not despawn, learn the game before you start complaining).

Building nodes, fortifying defenses. Hell if ya work at it and get enough supplies you can build entire bunkers and make points damn near impenetrable on foot. Seems like you're focusing on the killing potential, instead of the actual job.

You basically didnt mention the one thing engineers should be used for and thats building stuff
