Rifleman Mosin Nagant
It's such a minor thing to get annoyed about but what is with the first level Mosin Nagant missing its top wood?

Depends on the model of the Nagant. Unless you are refering to the Actual frame being missing

So far as I know all mosin nagants have top forewood. Them one I'm referring to in game is what I think is mean to be an m1891

Apologies for bringing up this old thread, but this has been bothering me about the M91 Mosin too. Also, I think the rear sight is wrong like it looks to be a simple "u" notch too close to the front blade. While I wish I can describe them better, but true M91 sights have a "u" notch rear sight but they swooped down to the gradulated ladders. In other words, the original rear sight has a more open sight picture than what we have in-game. And I wonder if players and history buffs alike would appreciate that more.

The first tier Mosin is a Mosin Nagant M91, the first variant used during ww1. The second tier and the most common IRL is the Mosin Nagant M91/30. This was the upgraded version with a front sight hood, rear sight change, sighting going from arsians to meters and the addition of the handguard. Personally the M91 Mosin should be a option for engineer or medic not the primary rifleman considering the USSR made like 20 million M91/30's and they where literally everywhere. The first tier is a (for the most part) correct M91 just the early version of the Mosin. Like the Kar98AZ is an early version of the Kar98k and so on.

Probably a design choice to different the weapons from one another better.
The BAR also had a handle and a bipod usually, yet both are nowhere to be found.

You are correct lol guess I was remembering incorrectly thank you. Probably saw one without it at a gunshow at one point and have been thinking about that.

The very first production of 3-line 1891 rifles had no top wood cover - it was added pretty quickly.

This is awesome. I thought I knew a fair bit about the mosin nagant but I didn't know that.
