I usually have a good time in multiplayer if the host brings Yakumo along, it's a lot more easier to keep them alive since one of my team buffs is the barrier.
Ranged: Io > Mia
Melee: Yakubro > rest
Choose a cute one that helps or makes you happy.
Once its at the area of the special gifts, Jack and Mia are clear favorites so far.
Mia white was my pick early for the story, Yakumo did replace her later for the harder enemies. He's just the best Ai companion you can get.
Simply bcoz Io can boost your regen and do dmg at range, but yakumo works as a tank, he can draw their attention, but i have noticed that he rarely ever use the healing(dont remember name) when you go down.... so if i do ♥♥♥♥ up, i always die with yakumo summoned...
Io is a second favorite, because she also deals good damage and can get rid of status ailments.
All the others are kinda good, but their problem is that they usually die fast. Esspecially Mia. So annoying.
For general use Yakumo and Io are hands down the best though. Yakumo is a bit better at killing bosses, Io is a bit better at area cleaning.
Louis is average at everything.
Jack kinda weak, but he makes up for it with his OP Communal.
Eva & Mia seem good for non-boss enemies, but against bosses, their HP pool too small, out of the two of them, i found Eva to be the stronger.
Idk anything about White Mia because i don't use her enough.
For me, when it came to the average enemy Louis was the best, he was quick and dealt decent damage to take care of a crowd of enemies as long as I was around on par with level. But he lacks when it comes to bosses, he usually dies quick for me.
Mia for me was a great ranged unit, having the mobility to stun enemies while getting combos in. And unlike Louis, she was able to keep herself alive in boss battles with good timed dodges. He greatest weakness is her damage, as she has the lowest attack of the companions. This worked the same with Eva, but I don't use her much so I can't be precise.
I never used Jack, but with his OP moveset I imagine he at least can deal decent damage, albeit that makes me think he's a bit of a glass cannon as a result.
Yakumo, the absolute UNIT he is, was the go to companion for the bulk of the game. He has massive damage and pretty good defenses. His dodging wasn't good, but he was the best option for me with bosses, and he could clear a crowd of enemies instantly if we were in a narrow hall. The best to him was his lack of reliance on ichor, making him ideal for fighting enemies that use inhibit, and especially against Mido.
And of course that leaves Io, she is without question my go to companion. She has good attack power and has a variety of gifts to back them up. She's great for fighting unique enemies, especially ones with ice and lightning weaknesses. She has an average health pool but always manages to keep herself alive. Her only real weakness is that she's pretty reliant on ichor for support and damage, she's the balance to Yakumo where she is better in the average encounter but suffers more against inhibit using enemies.
Which is hilarious because lore wise Jack is probably the strongest companion.
That said, Mia and Jack's communal buffs are pretty broken by the way. The only problem is that their AI needs a lot of babysitting.
Jokes aside, been a while since I started the game but until you could get Io, I think I was mostly using Yakumo not because he was good or anything, but because he seemed more "human" than Louis who only seemed to care for research at the time. Then I got Io and hasn't turned back since... But maybe I should have another look at what buff they bring... Mmh... Nah, Io it is.
Mainly Io, cause a Succesor and his Attendant should stay together.
