DUSK really disappointed. Is this better or more of the same?

Hey man, I'm not trying to be a ♥♥♥♥. I just didn't like DUSK. If AMID EVIL improved on it I'd love to buy it. You don't have to be so salty.

I knew the boneballs in Dusk were a reference to Devil Daggers.

He's the head developer of Dusk btw.

DUSK and AMID EVIL are apples to oranges in a lot of ways, so you might like it, or not (If you wanted what DUSK was going for), it's its own thing, also not technically developed by the same devs, even though I've seen some mistakenly say that, same publisher, but Indefatigable mainly consists of Leon and Simmo.

I prefer AMID EVIL because of the ambience, lighting, theme, weapons, and architecture/level design. With that said both games are really just companions to the Quake series in that you run around killing baddies while looking for the keys then the exit to the level. For some folks that grew up with these type games that's enough but then for others it's not.

I know. That's why I identified the response as overly sarcastic. I'm just looking for honest feedback on AMID EVIL in comparison to DUSK, not trying to dump on the developers.
It might help make a more contextually apt comparison if you say what you didn't like about Dusk.

Buggy and shallow. Look, I love old-school FPS's; I still boot up Outlaws regularly because it's the best DOOM-style sprite based shooter in history in my opinion, but DUSK just felt intentionally janky for jankiness sake. I'm not saying it's terrible, just that I'm hoping if AMID EVIL is going for an old-school shooter feeling that it includes present-day polish and depth along with it.

What is depth in your opinion? Two or three of the handful of negative reviews of Amid Evil thought it was too shallow, that it needed more systems built into it other than the Doom Combat chess, vertical environments with varied enemies with their own personalities, and a swiss-army arsenal of a unique weapon for every occasion.
If that's too little for you and you wanted some kind of progression system, XP, inventory or other layered mechanics, then yes, you'll be disappointed.
Very polished and lacking in bugs though for the most part.

Both Dusk and Amid Evil are awesome and nail the overall quake 1/Doom feel IMO.

If you don't like these games, honestly I question whether or not you were ever a fan of old school fast paced first person shooters in the first place.

Whenever you see "retro" and attempts to ride coattails of old classics (despite Heretic being almost pure Doom reskin) - it's an excuse for crappy visuals and half-assed gameplay.
Still a bit vague. I didn't experience bugs in Dusk either, as far as I recall, so I can't offer much there. Not sure what you mean by Shallow either, outside of maybe the story not being a big focus (despite some peripheral lore), and the stylistic graphics might turn some off. Those aside, the gunplay, map design (though some are a bit cramped, others were great like Escher Labs and Coming Home), music, movement, and so on were all awesome for me, which is why lack of specifics makes it hard to be objective about what you want to be different. I prefer a great story, and don't care at all about graphics period - but I did't require either of those to enjoy Dusk for what it was trying to do.

But...differences - AE's maps tend to be more open, but still generally linear. More secrets in AE but less map interactivity, so secrets are mostly delegated to nooks/crannies and "rocket" jumps with the occasional hidden button (no blowing up walls). Combat in both is very similar in that, like most oldschool games (especially those without hitscanners), you'll be backing up and circle strafing a lot - but AE, being fantasy/magic, has a different feel with some different weapon effects (like one that chain lightnings on enemy overkills). Powerups in AE are also instant use, rather than items, other than "Soul Mode" which replaces secondary fire with a pretty extreme timed bonus (earned by collecting enemy souls or the occasional bigger souls lying around the maps) to attack effect and power which visually changes the attacks as well. AE is more atmospheric, big in part due to the music but also due to a more sort of fantasy/dark magic theme rather than the hillbilly horror theme and heavy metal of Dusk, and AE does have a higher graphical fidelity. All level maps are accessed through portals that exist in a hub, similar to Hexen (AE's closest comparison alongside Quake). Max speed movement in AE sort of sits between Dusk's run speed and max speed with hops - your character in AE is heavier for sure.

That's about all in terms of differences that I think would matter to you.

i was SO tempted to not even bother reading this after reading "dusk really disappointed". i mean the word "disappointed" should never be used in the same sentence with "dusk" or "amid evil"! ;) steam ratings for both games speak for themselves.
while they dont mean that those positive ratings have to apply to your tastes, it shows your taste is outside the norm. so how can we judge if you like this or not?

try the game, if you dont like it refund.

While New Blood is the publisher of both games, they're made by different devs. So the games are different for sure.

If it helps, I love Outlaws (imo the only game that gets the spaghetti western feel right). I even have a big box copy.
