McDonald Seems Out-of-Place...
Is it me, or does it feel like McD doesn't belong? The farm overshadows his ranch with Emily and the shop, nobody talks about him outside his quests, and he's overall the most forgettable character in the game. It feels like he was just shoehorned in to fill in a couple of tiny gaps that could have easily been filled by Emily, and to provide a real-life reference to chuckle at. It gives off the vibe of a self-insert character that somebody modded in that goes "And I'm here, too!" when the other characters talk about the current tragedy that's going on.

He's definitely in his own head and other than Sophie mentioning him once, he feels like he's not a part of town for some time. Although, unlike their new game, the "town" feeling is basic. Romances are FAR lacking comparatively and friendships can also feel a bit.. eehh. You don't feel like some super builder in Portia, but you do get some nice words and thank-yous. I started with Portia and have a deep fondness for it. All the characters fit their role for me.

If you're new to the game, I won't spoil it, but he does have quests.

McD shows up at the end of Emily's romance quest along with Sophie. If it was only Sophie there it would be just a little sad...

Other than that, I'd agree with you. Feels like he has no purpose other than to sell you a horse. There might have been an animal competition / festival planned that was scrapped.

But don't worry, he'll be famous one day!

Not even Sonia and Antoine are there? Some friends!

In earlier versions, there was a minigame associated with him that would reward you with animal drops, I think that was before you could have a ranch on your property, or at least as alternative to it. That minigame was dropped at some point in favor of him just being a normal vendor, I think. It's been quite a long time since that minigame existed.

I just checked. It's still there, at least on the PC version. Go to McD's ranch, and just inside the fence is a large closed bag. Get close enough to interact with it to start the minigame. You can still play it. It's a good source of Worn Fur in the early game.

I'm quite good at that game, at least until I'm not.

I can't help but wonder if the other folks in town get tired of hearing about McDonald's delusions of grandeur and how he expects to become world famous for selling burgers. Yes, we know that you'll be famous. No, we don't need your autograph. Oh, look! Animal manure that needs to be picked up! Now if you'll excuse me....

He still had a mini-game last time I checked, and a store. You can rope his critters.
