Does better furnaces smelt faster?

So do the higher tier (Industrial and Civil furnaces) smelt faster, Or consume less woods then previous versions?

If not, is it's only purpose to unlock additional crafting recipes?

And is there a way to increase the Smelting speed of ores in furnaces?

I think the energy consumption is the same, but you can put in more fuel at one time, and yes, they do smelt faster.

Also, close to the end of the game (so it's not all that helpful anymore) you get a building that does things much faster... I think.

They are slightly faster, yes.
The comprehensive cutter/grinder skips the smelting step. For carbon steel it is WAY faster.

Awesome!!! I checked the wiki, and all it said was it was more "furl efficient" But I didn't know if that just meant cause you can put more wood in it, or what..

Thank you for letting me know.. now I'll be replacing and making about 10 Industrial Furnaces for now. ^_^

Yep always upgrade your items when able, and get plenty of them. Make sure to start using the fire generators when you can start crafting those also, they change the fuel used by your machines into cheaper more efficent wood so you won't have to worry about power stones etc any more. ! fire generator per 2 machines, so if you have 10 industrial furnaces make up 5 fire generators to fuel them. You'll be using fire generators/furnaces for much of the mid game until later when you get factories.

More more more, fill up everything, you'll have plenty of resources later to get those furnaces/cutters/etc going all the time, and making money. Furnaces to make glass out of all the sand, furnaces to make all your ingots, etc etc. I use a little bit of blenders, grinders, etc but most of my stuff are furnaces and cutters to blow through all the ingots/glass/wood/stone/etc that i gather up, and later the wood and mining farms that supply me. I think i currently have about 60 industrial furnaces pumping out every hour of the day, and no more simply because i don't have any more room really between the machines and the plant/tree growing area.
