Some noob questions:
1) Is fuel, in machines, consumed when the machine is not in use?

2) Do small trees eventually turn into big trees, thus I should leave them alone?

3) Does leaving the stump of a tree make it grow back faster?

4) Are quests time sensitive? Can I just ignore a main quest, for example, and do my own thing until I'm ready?

1. NO
2. Yes, and you can cut it because for in 3-4 days they will grow again.
3. NO, When you cut the stump, it may also give you a hardwood.
4. Yes it is. It may cause your relationship with other villagers reduction. And the Main Mission is depend on the fixed time it gave, if it's not have , you can do what you want.

1 is actually "depends" you will be able to build a generator machine mid-game that, if not in use, should be turned off or it will consume all of its fuel.

4 can be tricky. Some quests need to be done and some can sit and wait till you get around to them.

As a general rule of thumb I do anything NPC related ASAP so I don't have to worry about any potential relationship issues.

Story quests I prepare and do at my leisure unless the quest specifically states a time frame for completion. It all depends on how fast I want to get through it.

Cheers..!

1. Individual machines only consume fuel when in use. Generators and factories are different but they come later.

2. Trees spawn full size. If it's a small tree, it will stay a small tree.

3. Leaving stumps doesn't make trees grow back faster, it just saves stamina. If you're cutting down a tree big enough to leave a stump, your going to get a few "extras" in addition to the wood and hardwood you get. You won't get any of those from the stump.

4. It depends on the missions. For commissions you get at the Commerce Guild, you can look at the bottom of the commission to see how much time you have to complete the assignment before you accept it. For all of the missions you've accepted, you can see how much time you have to complete them in the Mission Interface (L key if you're using a keyboard to play).
