wheras the main objective in MTAP is to forage resources and to craft items and smooch up to the townsfolk, you can have a few animals but i find them more anoying than usefull. Thus to me it has a largely different vibe
But i really love it, try the free demo version to see if its for you ( just remember you cant take your safe from the demo to the real game)
Some similarities, but the comparison to Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley is MUCH more applicable than any comparison to Slime Rancher. IMO, the only similarity the two share are being vaguely rural-based and graphics. Gameplay and mechanics wise, you won't find much common ground at all, and liking one won't be the best guarantee of liking the other.
If you've played Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley, then MTAP is fundamentally more similar to those. If not, I can explain the super important differences between SR and MTAP in more detail
I've never played HM or Stardew. The reason Portia reminded me of Slime Rancher is in slime rancher you are not just raising slimes and collecting plorts but you are also crafting drills & pumps and transporters, plus you have side quests like Mochi's manor and hunting for gilded gingers and also interacting with other slime ranchers. Stardew Valley and similar games seemed to me just growing crops & raising livestock. Also, the 3d look of Slime Rancher & Portia had a lot more in common than Stardew. I can't try the demo version yet since I'm gaming on a Mac, and they just announced that was upcoming, but I thought a would ask here in the forum to see if I want to go ahead and buy it cheaper now in Early access before the price goes up.
Try to watch a few Let's Play! It will give you a better idea of the game mechanics, since you cannot try the demo
