Report a translation problem
I'm sure you've already tried verifying the game files. If neither of those things work, please make a bug report in the bug report forum. Can't imagine what's wrong if the savefile isn't broken.
The cookbook is empty until you start experimenting with cooking and make a successful dish and then that recipe will be added to your cookbook, if you don't want to try to figure out what ingredients to add look on the wiki, all the recipes are listed there.
The one I 'lost' was for some fruit pastry.
If you are talking about the fish porridge for the Hulu brother when I had that quest he told me what ingredients to use and when I made it the recipe was added to my book, the book was empty before that.
Did you actually make the fruit pastry for the mission?
Try making it again and see if it gets added to your book, egg, milk, fruit.
What am I doing wrong?
Did you have the items in your hot bar to add fairly rapidly and then a couple seconds later press E to cook, I think the timing is as important as the right ingredients.
