ruin structures in the mines

In the mines, you occasionally come across large, broken pieces of buildings. Mining these will yield a few bricks, or a pipe or some hardened clay. originally, it was difficult to mine some of these. You had to stand on them at just the right angle to get the mining action to work.

Now I'm finding myself with the opposite problem. I'm at a point in the game where I don't need a few bricks from the structure and would like to keep them intact because they are interesting visually. However, mining close to them inevitably lands a strike on the object itself (I'm using a drill). I wind up losing the item I'm trying to avoid hitting.

Recently I restarted a day twice but was still unable to avoid hitting the structure while cleaning out around it. Maybe I should try the lowest-level pickaxe? That might work on the stone without affecting the structure. Anyone else try leaving these structures standing in the mines? Have you found anything that works?
