Finding Hardwood

Is hardwood restricted to the level 2 axe or is it just really rare? I've cut down about 400 wood's worth of trees and have not found any hardwood yet.

The smaller trees will have a very small chance of dropping hardwood.

this is what you need to do: goto the ruins, look for brown dirt, mine till you can mine anymore, (you should have tin and copper), make a upgraded ax

yes Hardwood comes mainly from the bigger trees you can only chop down with your lvl 2 axe, but after you got it you will drown in hardwood.
