There is a maximum of 3 contests per day (and the event takes 2 days). You should also bring enough bait, your best fishing rod and have enough free space in your inventory to carry the fish and the prizes home.
Once you registered a timer starts counting, get to the fishing spot itself and try to catch as much as possible (that part is the same as fishing normally).
You can improve your chances to win by having the skill that tells you which fish is taking the bait and then catching only emperor fish to get more points.
There is a rare chance to lure in a king fish, but with the starter rod, your chances to reel one in are very slim.
What is working different from normal fishing is, that the timer will keep ticking down the entire time, so catching quantity might win over quality.
There IS also a register, but it's for turning points into prizes, not for registering (ha!)
