wooden storage boxes
I have around 20 storage boxes, I know about the sort all option. Can I sort my storage boxes so they display Alphabetically on the drop down list?

Haven't tried it myself, but otherwise I know that putting the box in your inventory (removing the items) and dropping it back will work.
This is almost right, but after you "refresh" the box order by picking up and placing the boxes in the order you want in the list, after you go to sleep and save the game, you then have to quit to title and reload before the game will have updated the order of boxes in the list.

Like say I have Boxes 1, 2, 3, and 4, but the game's showing them in the order of 4, 1, 3, 2, when I want it in numerical order.

I'd go to Box 1, press F to pick it up, then place it back on the ground. You can move it to another area, but just to keep it simple for this example it's going back in the same spot.
Then I go find Box 2, pick it up and place it back down. Same for Box 3 and then Box 4.
After that, that's not enough. I could check the order again and it'd still be 4, 1, 3, 2. Now I have to go to sleep to save. Now I quit to main menu, and when I load back into my game, my boxes are now ordered 1, 2, 3, 4 on the drop down list.

It could take some time if you have a ton of boxes, but it's probably the most effective way of reording, outside of being meticulous about box placement from the beginning of the game.
A good time to do this is when you're upgrading all of your storage boxes from Wooden Storage to Metal Storage, or from Metal Storage to Safety Boxes, or just plain because you're rearranging things on your plot of land..

I wish. It's something I really hope they implement. The current system doesn't make much sense

Yeah same. The storage system has a couple of big issues unfortunately.
Well I had a relatively good system going from the beginning considering, named my boxes and had them aligned in the order I wanted, so it was a just a habit to take to go to the box I wanted to easily...
And then they added the possibility to check all the boxes without actually moving when the game left EA, and you don't need to actually move your character anymore to each box, which is great but...
Like you said, there're not in alphabetical order, nor in order of where they are placed (except for boxes that you might have inside the house, those are at the end of the list - it's all very confusing.
I think the game keeps track of them in order of creation maybe? I can't see any other explanation, it's not practical anyway.

The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Oh god yes this works, just tried it and it really is a "last box placed" order... and I can confirm too, you need to go back to the game's main menu and not just sleep.
This explains so much since I did experience once to try and fix the order by moving the boxes and the contains, and it kinda screwed up everything the next day.

Anyway, this is good to know, thanks Nyaru!

There's also a mod on Nexus that sorts alphabetically, as well as a few other small changes.

It's a great mod. I really like it. For example, Abandon Ruins 1 Items go in a box labeled "5a. ABR 1 Items". I have 2 boxes with Gather and Loot items so those I named "1a. Gather & Loot" "1b. Gather & Loot". I started with numbers first, then letters but you could reverse it. Also, be aware that it doesn't recognize numeric sorting beyond 9, so "10" sorts as 1 and then 0, in other words 10 doesn't sort after 9. Happy Hoarding!
