Unless you have a Recycle Machine, and have received gifts like Jewelry Boxes, Crystal Pendants, or Crystal Chandeliers to break down into crystals, you might have to rely on the slowly respawning crystal deposits found around the world.
Seriously though, crystal trees are your best bet. Luckily if you spend lots of time in the ruins you can get data discs easy and thus most of the farming materials needed, but you'll still be limited by growth.
UNTIL that same mission, the Bout, where I suddendly needed a bizarre amount of it.
Just a minor balance issue, in my opinion.
It's almost like a prank to make a barely used resource during all game to be a real issue on the last 5 minutes.
It's probably more than 50 times all the crystal that I used during my whole play through.
It's a large balance issue.
But there's also a couple of places where you can find crsytals in the wild (collapsed wasteland, at the left of the hazardous ruins, or at the tip of amber island), or in the haunted cave.
Not sure if you can use the recylcer to get some crystals back from items made out of crystals (crystal necklace, jewelry box, etc...).
I'm honestly glad they've taken away the time limit on "The Builder's Bout", or at least so it looks that way since I've been watching a YouTuber do it now. When I did it, there was a 7 day time limit. Thank goodness I'm a pack rat, or I would never have finished it in time! Looking forward to the day my baby Builders get there now instead of almost dreading it. :)
As a new player, I'm really glad there is no time limit for the bout. It would be impossible to finish it in time unless you had a bunch of the crystela trees planted beforehand.
(If you are faster than 1 minute you can be rewarded with saphires and carbon fibres.)
The biggest problem you'll have is you're not getting any rep from story missions while you're waiting, so use the time to add to the museum and place ads in the paper.
