SPOILERS!
My personal progression goes: pactice sword (stolen from Django's house on day one), the iron sword, lion's claws, enhanced iron sword, corps hammer, war hammer, nova sword, rogue knight's sword, obsidian edge (as backup for breaking boxes etc...). There are others, but I get along just fine with these, and I don't care for the guns. I like to slice and dice 😁
Though I still want the combat wrench we're armed with in the main game art.
We'd end up like Max from Dark Cloud 2.
That'd be pretty neat, though.

Anyways, I used swords all throughout the game.
Like the order went Practice Sword -> Enhanced Practice Sword -> Spiked Practice Sword -> Iron Sword -> Enhanced Iron Sword -> Nova Sword all with crit chance accessories.
Crits were super deadly with certain swords, so having a boosted crit chance went well with them.
I just really liked the dashing thrust that swords have as their first hit in the combo.
It's so fast! I like the mobility.
Just like in Nier Automata. I see what you did there.
And yes, a wrench would be a fantastic starter weapon - then you could pair that with some sewer dungeon ost from DC2 as you go through the first hazardous ruins and it’ll just be perfection.
