PC or Switch ?
Hi there,

I have been playing the Demo version of this game on my PC.
But notice it might be more convenient to play this on my Switch due to the portability.
It is still a question mark whether the Switch control would be better and more convenient.

I know they have not released the Switch version yet
I really want to buy the Pre-order (cause of the bonus items!)
Having a demo on Switch before release would give me a better idea, but unfortunately demo was not there (yet)

Silly question, but do you think I could transfer my save game from my PC to Switch at all?
Perhaps adding having ''account'' features would be good so we can play both platforms on the same account with same save game.

Also, would you rather play this on PC or Switch? Let's have a vote :)

No, you won't be able to transfer save files. That's because the Switch version is not on the same update version as PC. I'll get to that.

Anyways...

I don't recommend the Switch version... at all. Not in its current state, at least. I was one of the people that looked forward to pre-ordering the game for the Switch... But now I don't recommend it at all.

Some Youtubers have gotten review/preview copies and it's BAD, like, really bad. Some Youtubers edit their recordings to cut out stutters and long loading screens (Like SwitchRPG), but when you watch unedited streams and videos of the game you see just how bad it is.

The game on the Switch has no voices and graphics are reduced way worse than they should be (especially if you consider what other and way more graphically demanding games the Switch can run) and the game still doesn't perform all too well in certain situations. I have asked the developers themselves about this and their reply was very... avoiding and I've yet to get a proper reason why they removed voices entirely or if we might be able to download them as DLC later.

The game has very noticable stutters when cutting down bushes and the game lags for more than 2 seconds when opening either the options menu or the handbook at the assembly station. Framerate is also not very stable in some areas. Considering I haven't seen handheld mode videos yet to judge the performance for that... I don't have high hopes.

Several sound effects are not present as well. No footsteps, no door opening sound, no ambient sounds... And yet the game still needs more than a minute to load in certain instances. (Edit: They seem to have fixed long loading times, it's just a matter of when the update will actually be released)
That and if you have the PC version to compare, you immediately notice that the game is not up to date and is miles behind in updates... Considering how long it takes PatheaGames to update any other version of the game that isn't Steam... Yeah, you won't be getting those much needed updates and possible bug fixes anytime soon. 2 days ago the GOG version finally got the version 2 update with tons of fixes and content that was out for Steam much earlier. This doesn't make me hopeful they can update all 3 console versions in a short time next to the PC version from different stores.

Edit: The Switch version also doesn't have the Game Speed slider as Sabishi1985 has pointed out. This is very troubling because the game at 100% speed is really rough on newbies since missions and commissions have time limits on them and so many people already complain about failing NPC relationship missions because of that. Not being able to change the game speed to 50% is really awful for newbies imo.

I love My Time At Portia, I really do, but their Switch port is bad and not properly optimized which lead them to downgrade the graphics by a lot and every update that adds more content will make it worse because that's what's been happening on PC that a lot of people noticed no matter the specs (except the few that have beefy as heck rigs).

Of course I won't just be saying these things without sharing these gameplay videos... So here are some links and and some timestamps of Nintendo Switch gameplay videos:

https://youtu.be/DtgHAbWnAO4
@0:10 .. Game lags and hangs up momentarily to open the options menu.
@1:44 After the YouTuber made their character, the game takes quite a while to load into the game. (Load time from 1:44 to 3:24)
@13:50 the player opens the handbook at the assembly station and the game lags momentarily until the handbook opens proper.
@14:42 the player hacks down a small tree and the game again lags as the tree is being cut down at the 14:46 mark and lags again after cutting down the bush nearby.

Here's a link to a stream:
https://youtu.be/VQLe2pvnw-k?t=2552
Streamer/Youtuber goes into the abandoned ruins and lo and behold, no sand/soil deposits, which we have on PC since version 2, again proving the game is not up to date.
@47:07 streamer does some relic scans and the game should only scan one relic at a time, but the position of all the relics he scans are still there until he stops scanning. That's a bug.

Other link to a stream, same streamer:
https://youtu.be/okYTizEZxYM?t=329
@5:29 he initiates combat with monsters... Game stutters on first hit.

Youtubers say that this is the Switch version that people will get at launch... So, not good. Updates are planned post launch according to Youtubers to get the game on consoles up to date... But, again, there's no telling when that is.

Of course, I realize that a lot of people that are the target audience of this game probably won't care about these things or mind them too much... But, still, the issues are there and this is a bad port... Especially if they (Whoever makes the port) had the chance to better themselves for the console version after the issues the PC version has.

I will closely watch the state of the Switch version and get it once it's better.
For a game that costs $30~$40 depending on the region, this is way too expensive with what you get, especially if you have Stardew valley that costs way less on the Switch as well as Farm Together that many already love. Also Rune Factory 4 Special coming up for the Switch as well as Animal Crossing.
Then there's the fact that the release date for the Switch version is on the same day as Final Fantasy X/X-2, same week as Cuphead, same month as Dragon's Dogma and Final Fantasy XII Zodiac Age... All games I've been very much looking forward to and I don't have the money to buy multiple games a month when I can barely save up enough to buy myself nice and healthy food and pay all my monthly train tickets, lol.

TL:DR; Switch port is not good and lags behind in updates. I'd much rather just stick to PC at the moment. A single outfit is not enough to convince me to buy a very subpar version of the game.

Oh Wow! Thank you so much for the great information! This is definitely very helpful
Why would you get banned for this?
I'd rather have a blunt honest truth answer.
This is good!
So the fact that it's portable also won't convince you to buy it?
I mean, of course they will improve it one day right?
I also understand where you're coming from when you mentioned the low graphic issue.
I watched their trailer on Switch and notice how bad it looks on my switch's screen.
And graphic is an important aspect for me.

I see that you have been playing it for a while now on PC, how do you like it so far?

I have stardew valley on my switch, but not rune factory (I've heard of them)
But I never heard of Farm Together, are they good?

I'm coming from someone who had their childhood filled with Harvest Moon: Back to nature
So I love this kind of game, but it has to have relationship feature, that allow marriage and have kids :)
Soren Mar 31, 2019 @ 1:18am
Oh wow. Didn't know the Switch port would be that bad. I would think they'd aggressively update it though post launch, most devs do with this kind of thing..we shall see.
And yea, PC Portia is amazing. Easy purchase for anyone who is a farming game fan. I don't go anywhere so the lack of portability means nothing to me. Heh.
Sabishi1985 Mar 31, 2019 @ 5:37am
Oooof.. Thanks Mystic for pointing out the flaws of the Switch port.. I thought about buying the switch version as well, but I was afraid of the EXACT things you just pointed out. Long loading times, stuttering, bad graphics, missing sound effects.. "My time at portia" is such an amazing game, but if there is something the game lacks, it's optimisation. The game is already struggling on modern PCs, so there was NO WAY the Switch would be able to handle the game in its current state. :-/

So, this is going to be long again, but I guess that's just a characteristic of mine to write long walls of texts and explain everything in detail.... Sorry in advance.

Anyways...

"Played the game for a while" is a bit of an understatement... Steam doesn't record offline play (Plus I bought it on GOG first) so I already clocked way more hours than it says I did... To my shame...

I already own a gaming laptop that I already take with me wherever I go because I need it for college (I commute a lot), so portability is not that much of an issue for me, I just wanted it on a system that's lighter than my beefy gaming laptop and that doesn't need to be charged every hour when gaming... But I'm not willing to sacrifice so much for portability alone.

I'd rather buy the game in a state where it's already good instead of waiting for it to be good later.
After all, we all buy something and expect it to be finished and polished before it goes out to the market, no? Why pay full price for something that doesn't deserve the full price yet? (There's a reason games in Early Access are cheaper than release)
We are consumers, not beta testers that don't even get paid but pay them instead. Buying an unfinished/unpolished product just gives more developers an excuse to put out subpar games when they could be so much better. (Like Bethesda games... Or Bioware games lately... Or recently with Generation Zero... Or No Man's Sky when it released... Or Left Alive...)

As for what I think of the game. It's a very good time killer.
Good but still has some rough edges that need to be polished. I've played the game on 4 different characters and only now did I get burned out. (So much so I haven't touched games all week @_@)
It's not a farming game, don't let the console pre-order trailers mislead you. It's a crafting RPG simulation game in the same vein as Harvest Moon and other sim games that focuses on gathering materials to craft stuff (foraging, logging, mining and mostly mining), fighting enemies in hazardous ruins and socializing with NPCs.
The main story is 100% about the crafting and combat aspect of the game, farming is purely optional and you'll only need it twice for side missions and a festival (if you want to participate), it really doesn't net you much profit except having the crystal tree.
Your gameplay loop is basically waking up, grabbing a commission (unless you have a story mission or side mission to do, then you should finish those) gather materials, craft the things, hand in the things to complete the commission/mission, spend the day doing whatever you want like chasing your future wife or husband and go on dates or going into a hazardous ruin and kill a boss or two until you go to sleep (or just wait until 3am because the game has no real penalty for falling asleep or even dying against an enemy) and then repeat and then once you have enough money you upgrade your workshop.
It sounds boring describing it like that, but then again if you just describe Harvest Moon, Animal Crossing or any other similar sim game they all kinda sound boring until you play them yourself.
The game also features a wide variety of characters, some you'll love, and some you'll hate (They've intentionally been made like this and they're good). You can play and fight NPCs or go on dates and the game has quite a lot of mini games you can do here and there... They're not the greatest, but they're still there.
The thing that sets MTAP apart from other game of its kind is the fact that crafting is the focus, not farming (Honestly it's a breath of fresh air for me) and it's a bit more combat focused as well, since some story missions are about kicking monster's butt. And like I said before about the social aspect, you can go on dates and do more than just throwing gifts at NPCs to woo them. Also it's in 3D and aside from the ruins, Portia is an open world. That's neat.
The artstyle is unique and I can understand it's not for everyone, but it's vibrant.
Overall, I've had lots of fun wasting my days playing it only then to realize 2 months passed and I haven't started my assignments for the end of the semester and as a 26 year old I should know better, whoops.

That being said, it has its fair share of problems: Optimization and performance issues, bugs and unfinished NPCs in terms of story. Only a handful of romanceable NPCs have multiple missions as you build up your relationship with them and some don't have romance missions at all. (That and the fact that 2 romanceable NPCs exist that are literal recolors of generic NPCs you see as tourists or as the Dee Dee and Bus drivers...)

The game also has a bit of an issue with incomplete English voice overs, but the Chinese one is pretty much complete (And sometimes better imo, except for the characters that sound like moms forced to voice act that have been recorded with a phone) and I haven't played with English voices since making the switch. (My best boi Mint's English voice also does not fit him at ALL which was the main reason that I made the switch >.>)

Those are major complaints... but like I said, I still had fun playing this game and despite everything, I love it (which is why I'm so vocal about everything that's wrong with it) and I still believe the PC version is still the best version of the game (Of course it is, it was developed for PC, after all). I also reckon that most likely the Steam version is the one that will be properly maintained until they fully commit to developing Protoform.

If you want to get it, get it for PC if your PC can run it, I recommend it. (Also don't go by the demo alone, its performance is baaad)
If you really care about portability that much, then of course the Switch would be the better option... But not in it's current state... Unless you really want that one costume and that statue.

Phew, okay, walls of text. My fingers hurt. Sorry about that @_@'

As for the other games:
Rune Factory is an amazing series that I recommend to anyone that likes Harvest Moon but with more JRPG and much more focus on the social and combat aspect. Of course we don't know when 4 Special and 5 will come out in the West so you might be waiting for a long time.
Farm Together I've only heard about, but it's basically a multiplayer farming game and no NPCs from what I know? So you probably won't like it but supposedly it runs very well on the Switch. This game is for people that like farming and multiplayer and nothing else, because it's literally just that.
If you love Harvest Moon, then I guess the closest to it would be Story Of Seasons since it literally is Harvest Moon, just renamed. Only on the 3DS at the moment.

I just watched some more of the gameplay on a Switch.. The biggest deal breaker for me so far: You can't even slow down the game's speed in the Switch version. :-/ Damn it.. Why is this port so bad? I REALLY wanted it to be good.. ;-;

Wow, I totally missed that since I was so fixed on the voices being gone...

I simply CANNOT play this game at 100% speed.

wowzah, I guess I'll eventually buy the full version on steam
one last important question, is there any cut scenes on mtip ?
that's the feature I like the most on HM and so far, nothing can beat my childhood game HM back to nature, the sound track the cut scenes, it's amazing
stardew valley is not bad too

Yes, there are cutscenes throughout the whole main story and some NPC relationship side missions :)

This reminds me of Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life’s PS2 port. It has a huge stutter issue, yet they decided to launch it as is anyway. The difference here, though, is that Pathea is working on the Unity engine, something that is supposed to make coding your game a lot easier than other engines.

I’m no expert on game design, but I’ve played plenty of other games made on the Unity engine that were stable and still had plenty of content. A recent release that was also made on the Unity engine is a game called Outward, it came out about a week ago and, besides a few annoying bugs, is basically a perfect game.

I really admire Pathea for their vision and goal of trying to make a game that isn’t like anything else offered on Steam, but it seems their code needs work. What else could you possibly attribute the stuttering to besides the game having to chug through something wrong in the design?

By the way, I’ve noticed a bug that’s been around since launch - you can still kick trees after you chop them down. Not a big deal, but you’d think something like that would have been addressed since it’s an issue that’s over a year old.

Regardless... it looks like the only way you’ll truly be able to enjoy Portia is by buying the PC version. Barring that, you’re may need to wait a long time before the console version meets PC standards, (which I kinda doubt it will).

Ooof yeah, forgot to mention that. Sorry.

Hope you're enjoying the full game so far :)

A handy advice: Never make just one of a workstation. Trust me, you'll always need at least 2.
