Winter Solstice help

Is it buggy or am I doing something wrong? I have a backpack full of food and I just stand next to the big pot for a few hours while townsfolk come by and dump things in. I haven't really gotten to "play" the minigame at all. I've reloaded the event/day several times already and it's always some sort of weirdness.

1. Only maybe three NPCs had pictures over their heads- the rest stood there doing eating or doing throwing animations until the event ended. Spicy meter only went up to maybe the second "line".

2. Very few if any NPCs go up to the pot at all. There are no pictures of what they want tossed in. I stand around for a few hours until the event ends.

2. As many NPCs as possible bum rush the pot all at once. All NPCs want an item tossed in, but you can only throw maybe three or four items before the others lose interest. After that the remaining NPCs come by the pot but don't have pictures of what they want. The event ends.

There is no happy medium. :(

I didn't buy enough for the achievement at least

I had like 50 chilli paper with me and they were barely enough to trigger the achievement... so yeah, better pay Sophie a visit the day before.
