Eventually, you'll be able to go out on play dates with npcs once you're friendly enough.
After reaching certain friendship ranks, you'll gain a chunk of points with their friends and family as well.
Festivals and holidays tend to give points with everyone, as well as doubling the points earned when gifting on those days.
Some quests in the game can give a decent amount of points with everyone.
Relationships start slow in this game, but it picks up considerably after a while.
Gifts can be given everyday, whereas play/dates once a week. Once you find what an npc really likes, stick with that because you'll get good relationship boosts. Some npcs relationships are harder to level on purpose.
