You can see their stats at your stables.
In the meantime you can rent a horse at Farmer McDonald's horse stall (once you've repaired it).
You may certainly try out a llama. If it's not your cup of tea, you can always sell it. Many catch the cotton llama for gols; Rainbow llamas sell for less.
Keep in mind that except for the rental horse and the cotton Llama, they all require significant training. You don't have to train them, but the purchased horses don't surpass the rental until they're trained. While that's happening you'll continue to rent a horse while your new one gets ready.
The Rainbow Llama's main advantage is it's very cheap compared to buying a horse, just a trap plus some bait. It takes a lot of training, but it has max stats identical to the brown horse.
The Cotton Llama is almost as fast as the white horse, and probably faster over a long haul with enforced rests because it has a faster END recovery rate.
It does bounce up and down a lot, and I've had cases where I got stuck because it bounces forward instead of runs forward. For example, saddling up under a merchant's awning can get you stuck and force you to dismount to advance.
The "tame the llama" minigame is annoying enough that I'd practice a time or two on Rainbow llamas before trying to catch a cotton one. It'd suck to burn a $1000 Ginseng just to fail the taming minigame.
I suck at the llama capture game.
