The contests were added in the most recent patch and it seems quite logical to place one in each season of the year. It would have been more unfair to place the kung fu match in the Spring since a completely new character would be squashed.
I tried fishing some days before to get a feeling for the mechnic. That was all I needed. Tip: don't try to learn the mechanic with the catfish (the fishing spot at the bridge). They are too easy and forgiving. Try the Salmon one at the waterfall. If you can (almost) consistently catch the salmon you win the tournament easily.
You can buy them at the farm, i think if you haven't collected enough
So it's be nice if it's the first time you see an event (so year 1 basically) the Message told you what to bring, or the day before gave you a no xp quest for "prepare for fishign contest" and had you pick tome herbs and buy some at the store.
If you want to use Stardew as an example, the flower dance is much better. It's almost impossible to get a partner on year 1 (the only possible one is Haley provided you get enough Help wanted missions from her and diligently increases her affection on the side).
Even then, the flower dance is a short skipable cutscene, whereas fishing day is a skill (and luck) based minigame.
That being said, as others pointed out, it seems to be winnable on year 1, I didn't have much problem catching fish, it's just rather slow with the basic rod, so some of day 2 NPCs can easily outscore you if you aren't lucky enough.
That being said, I came out as more frustrated than I meant to be. Fishing day is still extremely profitable for this point in the game, and the fishing minigame is kinda fun (better than Stardew's in my opinion).
