Could just be me, but it seems rather impossible. There are shadows to show where the gits are falling, and a shadow for the ship. Those things certainly help. But there are so many villagers and they are very successful at picking things up. I know I probably am just terrible, but I didn't manage to pick up any gifts at all. It seems it might be better if the villagers were a little slower in picking them up, or if the villagers were more spread out.

yeah I only managed to get one, and I was a little late so I missed the explanation which is anooying!

It is really annoying. The villagers also home in on the boxes knowing where they're going to fall before they even get to the ground. I've taken to looking directly up at the balloon and getting lucky somtimes with drops. Sometimes E won't actually open the boxes either its a bit slow.

I followed the crowd the entire time and managed to get around 10 gifts.

I succeeded in getting the very first gift to drop (a bag of seeds, joy). All the others were absolutely sniped by villagers, yeah. It seems like you can't claim a gift while in motion or even shortly after stopping. If you are in any form of animation frame, E doesn't register.

My tips for the day:
Try and kick the presents, it will stop the other characters picking them up.
Barge into the character picking it up. It will sometimes stop them picking it up and they will move to another one.
The row between the two plazas is where you will get the majority of your gifts.
Don’t stand directly underneath, stand a little further back so you can determine where the presents will drop.
Don’t stand in the middle of the crowd, you will miss a lot of presents trying to sprint out and getting stuck even more.

If you feel extremely ripped off, you can always restart the day and have another turn at it. :)
