Multi-player.
I know, I know. You probably don't want to hear this right now.

But... this is the time to add it in. Not when the game engine is very ingraned into singleplayer roots and you end up having issues like Factorio, Space Enginers, and Stardew Valley have when they added (or are adding) it in later down the road.

I can already name Two players and game onwers who would love to be playing together.

This is all just my, and my wife's opinion, but I'm fairly sure we are not alone.

ofc it'd be nice but there's a myriad of games to play co-op and this game prioritizing to become as satisfying single player experience as it can possibly be is a little more important than having fun with friends, imo.
This was already addressed by the devs and is even sticked but for the lazy here is the quote

"Will there be multiplayer?
We are focused on building My Time At Portia to be an immersive singleplayer experience.
"

Actually your wrong about that. At least none that are nice and relaxing, Stardew is the only one that's close, and he's shoe-horning it in.

Anyway.. this is our opinion.

@DaemosDaen I absolutely agree. Their funding would skyrocket as any couple can pick up on this game. It's not demanding at all when it comes to hardware requirements. It's user friendly and downright adorable! I just got done mentioning this in another discussion but now is definitely the time to implement, at the very least, a local two player option without having to change anything major to the game.

I have never taken part in any discussion regarding any game on steam til now (and I've been a steam user for over a decade.) This game is seriously going somewhere and while I don't want to come off too strong, a multiplayer function would be incredible! I'd easily buy a couple more copies at the current market value if not more simply for the joy of sharing my wonderful experience in Portia with loved ones.

Hands down one of the better games on steam currently and this isn't even my usual style of gaming. That's how great it is. PLEASE ADD A TWO PLAYER!!!

We're not going to add any multiplayer to Portia, sorry.

But we might when we get to the Sandrock DLC. But one step at a time, gotta finish Portia first.

My opinion on this.
Adding in multi player to a game that was designed for single player is a massive amount of work. It needs to have been in mind from day 1.

If the devs stopped working on single player and focused on adding multi player, it would possibly take a re write of the game, meaning no new single player content for a long long time.

While playing this kind of game "farming, casual etc" is something i definitely would love to play. Right now i think it would ruin the nice developement pace that is happening currently.

The best we can hope for IMO is their next game. Hopefully they see there is a huge fan base with interet in multi player and keep that in mind if/when they start on a new game.

We can't made it multi-player due to the system structure of the game. It is designed based on a single play. If we are doing extremely well in EA or after Final release, then we might have the resource to addmulti player function, for now we can't do it. :( sorry.

I for one really hope this game develops into a wonderfuly fleshed out and long lasting Single Player game. Not every game need to have multiplayer. There are already plently of options for that. I think its great that this game and at least the last time I looked, Subnautica, (for example)are being developed w/o MP in mind.

I am honestly OK with no multiplayer. I am still waiting to see how stardew functions with multiplayer and I think it's going to be a worse experience. I've always felt like these games are balanced around one player.

Comfirmed we'll be getting post-1.0 content? :)

False. I don't mean to start a war. Believe me. I'm not saying the task would be trivial but they certainly don't need to re-work anything. Just make it a host-and-play type thing then add an option in the future for players to purchase servers or something. Just spitballing.

But to follow the theme here, the game plays astoundingly well in it's current state. I like the momentum and would settle on playing it the way it was meant to from day one - IF that meant they were to make dlc or a sequel game featuring multiplayer.

I appreciate your read and your response, dev! Truly. Can't wait to see what you bring to the table next. Definitely been enjoying the hell out of it as is. Do you guys have an official section or channel where suggestions can be submitted? Thanks in advance.

Ok fair enough, i have no idea how much work it would take. Though from past experiences playing games that were designed with only single player in mind, often moving to multi player is quite a task. But really it all depends on the coding and engine. It could be easy. I doubt it would be easy, which leads me to beleive that it would take more time away from the current games single player aspects. But as the Dev has said, it's something they would consider as a DLC AFTER they have done the single player game. Which works for me.

My main concerns would be the way time works. Some things pause the game when you do them, like hitting escape, or opening your inventory (at least i think it does) Certain things progress time, the obvious one being sleeping, but also going into hazardous ruins.

If the devs see no issue with working that out so that two people playing don't get out of sync, then cool.
Vrizuh Feb 2, 2018 @ 11:13pm
I think multi would be great, but this game is way too far along now. It may be labelled 'early access' but what I've played so far would be more like a late beta. My issues with it have entirely been around tuning. The engine etc is clearly bedded in.

I think there is a market for coop versions of these kinds of games. The question is whether that market is big enough to justify the extra man hours dealing with the issues introduced by working over latency or maintaining object state between multiple machines.
dtt.scanner Jun 21, 2018 @ 6:28pm
I agree with Vrizuh. Don't try to change horses mid-stream. Can it work? Yes. Is it wise? No.

Two-player, as opposed to multi-player, would be nice. Coop games have been requested constantly by nearly every gamer that I know: co-op Skyrim, co-op Fallout. Everyone wants a co-op version of great games... that would make the game even greater. Not ESO, Co-op! Bethesda is hearing the cry, and is finally thinking about co-op games. It may take a gaming company of that size and resources to accomplish a truly great co-op immersive game.

Every game is better when you can play it with a friend, as well as hold its own solo. That being said, I have to vote no on introducing something like that into Portia at this stage of development. It is just a bad idea if you want to see the game completed and ready for market at any time in the near future. The Dev mentioned possible DLC. That would be the smart move. Get something marketable on the shelf first, then create new content for it.

The game is built around the story of the builder and his/her workshop, trying to shove in multiplayer kinda breaks that idea to me.

The Devs will do what they do, but multiplayer for the sake of adding in multiplayer just seems like a bad idea.
